CFP Rankings: Michigan remains #3

Submitted by uofmchris2 on November 14th, 2023 at 9:31 PM

1. Georgia

2. ohio state

3. Good Guys

4. Florida State? (WASHINGTON getting absolutely snubbed again)

The disrespect continues. BRING IT ON.

Clearly going into to Penn State and beating them in a dominant fashion means nothing to these idiots.

Keep winning fellas!

Strange to see Iowa unraked in the AP poll, 23rd to the coaches, but 16 in the cfp. I'd rate Washington over FSU. Washington has played a much harder schedule and beaten Oregon, Utah, and Arizona.

My feeling is we have to dominate every game from here on out. Can’t have a stinker even in the B1GCG or they will try to keep us out. Since we won’t be playing a team in top 10 (Iowa is 16), Louisville is 10 and Oregon is 6… If Bama beats Georgia they could try to pull the okedoke on us.

I want to hear more about Ohio State ahead of Michigan.

Rank them higher.  Have Vegas favor the Buckeyes.  Tell us all how improved they are.  MHJ for Heisman - just unstoppable.   Please - keep pouring it on.   More “Buckeyes are better and can’t be beaten”…

I think that was the same mantra the past two years.   And, I liked how those editions of The Game went.

I'd like to be in the top two, but after that I care more about match-ups.

The way the current rankings stack up, I'd rather be at two and face FSU than at one and face Washington.   I think FSU is more conventional, and vulnerable to the "boa constrictor", while Washington is high variance and could possibly throw us off schedule, even if we'd beat them more times than not.

But if I follow correctly, you don't get to choose opponent, but only location.   So if Georgia is 1, Michigan 2, FSU 3, Washington 4, we'd still get FSU in a 2-3 match-up even if Georgia picks the Sugar Bowl.   So at least as much a travel / time zone hassle for FSU as us, and would imagine our fans traveling in more force to SoCal than FSU.

Congratulations to Jed for Arizona at 17.  He, not Dion, is the turn around story of the Pac12.  He still has a path to the championship game, I believe if he and Oregon State win out.

If Michigan bears OSU, Bama beats Georgia and Washington and FSU win out the top 3 are

1. Michigan

2. Washington

3. FSU

who is #4??    Georgia, Texas or Bama? Or is it OSU?

To be honest this is why I’m against the playoff.  Arguing over who was tougher than who was half the fun of football.  You could shame teams with weak schedules and transitive property the hell out of all of the games.

Normally the transitive property of football doesn’t work, but in this scenario I would think you’d have to use it.  Texas beat Bama and in this scenario Bama beat GA.  Texas only lost to OK  Edit:  I originally said Wa which was wrong.

OSU doesn’t make it because they lost to Michigan and only have 1.5 quality wins.

I think TX, Washington and FSU are probably easier to beat than Bama or GA.  (I haven’t seen them play and could just be traumatized from our last games against them.)

That said, if you assume we’re going to win, I’d rather beat GA or Bama.

thoughts?

In that situation, they would have to put Texas #4 since they have the win over Bama (they are supposed to value a head to head win when the resumes are similar) and Georgia shouldn't be #4 since they wouldn't have even won their conference. However, a CFP without an SEC team would never happen so in that situation they would use mental gymnastics to put Bama at #4.

In that scenario, Texas SHOULD be 4.  But I have a bad feeling they will elevate Alabama, as they would be SEC champs.  The ESPN panel even talked about that tonight.....the idea of overall resume potentially meaning more than a head-to-head win.  It's like they are setting the stage for and justifying that switch.

Penn St would get throttled by most of of the good SEC teams imo, ie. Ole Miss, LSU, and the obvious two powerhouses. They may even lose to Mizzou or an abnormally hot Auburn/Tenn. on an off day. Pac too.

Allard is really truly honestly some dookie. Let's not gloss over that. Solid win for us for numerous obvious reasons. But Penn St is kind of ass.

Meaningless CFP Poll stats:

This is the 40th time that Michigan has been ranked in the CFP Poll. This lags behind teams like LSU (42) and Utah (44) and is even with Oklahoma State. However, Michigan has been ranked in the Top 10 28 times, which is 7th most, and the Wolverines will overtake Notre Dame in this category in two weeks. Also, Michigan has been in the Top 4 17 times, which is 5th most behind Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Georgia. Texas had never been in the Top 10 of any CFP Poll until this year.

For us (and OSU), it's pretty clear.  Win out or stay home.

If Georgia, FSU and Washington win out, then the field is clear.  If Alabama beats Georgia and FSU/Washington win out, Alabama gets #4.  If Georgia/FSU win out and Washington loses to Oregon, Oregon gets the last spot.

The only way anything else happens is either total chaos, or two of FSU/Washington/Georgia losing.

Had an Ohio fan tell me- man you all struggled against Penn state!!

I retorted- struggled? They got a garbage TD late, we ran 30+ times to went eh game and they couldn’t stop us, on the road, hostile environment, covered the spread, without our head coach.
I got crickets after that. Fuck Ohio.

Not that these rankings mean shit right now anyway, but Washington has looked better than FSU IMO.  They had bad game a few weeks ago where Pennix through a pair of INTs and no touchdowns, against Standford or ASU I believe.

I will never try to understand the reasoning these assholes rank teams where they do.  UGA never should have been lower than #1, and Michigan never should have been lower than #2. UGA hasnt lost a game in 2 years and Michigan has only lost 2 playoff games.

Yeah, I know its about what they've done this year right? The same thing they've been doing the last 2 years!
