The recruiting debacle provides anecdotal evidence that we didn't cheat before

Ryan Day simply holds a press conference and gives his payroll budget request ($14 million).

We already have an idea of what D. Moore is being offered to go to Oregon. (I heard $5 million)

Dan Patrick reported that one QB prospect was asking $8million

We lose the Prince of Michigan royalty to Notre Dame (good luck to the kid really).

Raylen Wilson decommit.

The Hunter Wilson pleas for a better NIL system.

This does provide me the sober satisfaction that Michigan wasn't paying players.  If we were, we'd be a lot better at this than what we're showing.

What if Harbaugh is prescient? What if this doesn't pan out? What if guys are paid millions and then don't perform to that level? What if all that money is divisive on the team because only a couple guys draw that much, and everyone else is resentful because they have to settle for much less? It's too soon to tell how this will work or if it will work. What's wrong with incremental steps vs saying in a press conference that you need $14 million to have a decent roster?

The "Michigan is different" crowd, clearly haven't met

Grant Perry

LTT

Frank Clark

Taylor Lewan

Boubacar Cissoko

Justin Feagin

The list goes on.  If NIL has made paying kids legal, Michigan should be able to fork over top dollar. This is program is rich with tradition and has deep pockets. Football means a lot of alumni and if they want to continue to watch a winning program on the field, they need to keep with the times. Make no mistake though...If we continue to fail at recruiting NOW, wait when we are fielding subpar teams, and see how much more difficult it is to reel in top talent with little NIL money.

?? Clearly you are unable to understand what I was trying to say. Let me break it down for you so your brain doesn't hurt.

The Pius Michigan faithful who believe we cant pay kids to come here because "This is Michigan, and we are different" obviously forget that we are not that different from other universities. We have had our scandals and issues just like the rest of them. So instead of clutching our pearls and falling back on elitism, lets go after some top recruits and treat this more like a business (because thats the landscape in College Football).

In terms of pulling a rug out from someone's dream before....I find that a bit dramatic and have no idea what you are implying in reference to what I said.

Your shot Chief.

This is a question.  Are you pointing fingers or highlighting players who have had problems or issues at Michigan?  Thus, the reference to pulling the rug out.  One man is not defined by his past mistakes alone.  But hey I could care less about what you think about them.  I get what you're were implying, however I just thought it wasn't in good taste.  Ride on Lone Ranger.  It's your world.

Not meaning to be Pollyanna, and I guess I'm somewhat concerned too, but ... I still think too many people are going all apocalyptic here. Many great players were not highly recruited (Haskins, for one), and although it may take more work to find the diamonds in the rough and more work to coach/train them up ... I haven't yet seen any indication that our coaches aren't up to that. I mean ... including last year.

I don't know. I guess I need to see one game following the best season in the last 20 before I start selling all my Michigan stock.

Again. Not saying this recruiting period has been a success, obviously, but ... I'm also not going to conclude the sky is falling. I think Michigan's coaching staff and administration has a legitimate claim to my confidence (and my patience), and I'll give them both.

Also, I kinda like the "transformational not transactional" line. Doesn't mean people won't get paid here, seems to me. But we all believe Michigan is a special place with a special tradition, right? Why is it so outrageous for the athletic staff to use that as a promotional tool?

Better than the opposite, no? And yeah, I think that should be our mission, full stop. Sure, come and get yours, but our job is not simply to funnel cash to you, and if that's all you want, maybe this isn't the place for you.

If that is what Michigan wants its mission to be, then so be it. That's their call and not ours. But then they need to be realistic with themselves about what the program can achieve. With that mindset, they are not, I repeat, NOT winning a national championship.

Again, if that's not your goal anymore then fine. But I think with the current landscape of college football being what it is, Michigan can't have its cake and eat it, too. If you think you're better than and above funneling cash to recruits to convince them to come play here, then so be it. I can understand why, and its a noble pursuit in its own way. But don't tell me that your goal is to win a national title. You need to accept the fact that you're heading for a lot of 8-4 seasons where OSU will routinely boat race you in the final week of the season, MSU will likely pass you by in the coming years, and you're probably bound for the Outback Bowl or Tax Slayer Bowl in most years.

You just need to accept the consequences and outcomes that will likely result from this. Short of Harbaugh finding and developing a Deshaun Watson transformational type of player who elevates the entire team by himself (good luck finding him), you need to accept the fact that you've decided your program is just going to be a slightly more talented version of Northwestern.

You can't possibly be Pollyanna because she creates a "NEW" post either deriving from we don't nil, to Harbaugh doesn't pay, til Jack becomes a dull boy and fires Warde.  You can smell the fire behind the posters who relentlessly ask for Warde's head.  There's a bonfire lit inside there head and in their front yards.  Some of the reason why some young men don't and won't play for Michigan is inside this blog...  Just open your eyes and turn the key!!!  Some players will come here regardless of how the powers that be LOOK at them. The only thing that you can say without a shadow of a doubt is just glance at the players OSU has been paying for years, at QB.  Look at Alabama.  Then, look at Michigan's...  EUREKA.  There you have it.  So until some perceptions change of course we will struggle.  However, I'm here for it.  I wouldn't care if we became the 1900 team I will be inside that BIG HOUSE every home game until the Big Man the real one,"calls me home!"   I refuse to bash my team, community, coaches, AD, etc.  We will always have talent.  Until we realize what kind of talent wins Championships: see Georgia.  We won't win one.  I'll still forever be a Michigan fan, alum, I will never waver on my loyalty with the University of Michigan!  If I cannot help, I won't tear them down with menial words or false criticisms.  We have enough proof that we aren't ready for complete free-for-all recruiting.  That's evident OP, however we will still win football games and young boys will become men within the halls and walls of Schembechler.

I don't know if it proves anything other than that in a field of Donald Trumps, we're Jeb Bush.

On the one hand, sure, feel great about not being Donald Trump, on the other hand how much of a pedestal can you really be put on if you're Jeb Bush.

Shit...The way these kids train nowadays. The elite of the elite in high school could have played in the NFL 20 years ago. Strength training, nutrition, sleep tracking...places like IMG Academy...these kids are legit at 17 or 18 years old now. If they can collect a payday of 5,6,7,8 Million dollars before going to the NFL, good on them. They have put in a crap ton of work and deserve it. Michigan just needs to get on board.

Let me preface this by saying I am not wealthy enough nor willing to pay kids to go to Michigan so who am I to judge....but isn't this on our boosters? Nothing is "illegal" now. Nothing is stopping Ross from calling up Moore and dropping $7 million in his lap to stay home. Sounds like we have never really paid for players because if we were the open legality of it should just make us better at it. So in reality we have some of the worst boosters in the country because none of them are paying any of the players to come here.

A lot of whining on here.

We all knew Michigan was going to suck at this out of the gate, and cling to some altruistic standard to cover their sucking at it.

We also all knew those that have been paying for players to visit and commit and play in lunch bags were going to be much better at finding ways to do the same with NIL.

This inflection point will balance out enough at some point. Boosters will realize that money up front is something to more carefully invest and money spent on actual starters is a better choice. Starters who are already at Miami, Texas, Oregon, et al are going to be less engaged because they resent recruit signing bonuses and transfer to places willing to pay them signing bonuses.

This is going to be a several year shit show.

About the time Michigan figures it out, things will be settling.

Best description of NIL that I can find

"Big bank take lil' bank, bank
Big bank take lil' bank, bank
Type of money you gon' need a safe
Type of money you gon' need a bank"

Michigan either gets with the times, or learn to be happy finishing ahead of Rutgers every other year.

Commits...decommit all the time. I do think UM isn't doing great in the NIL game but I also think a lot of the movement we're seeing with certain guys is sort of expected.  Wilson was always a super-soft commit and I'm not surprised he's gone; if UM wants him they'll have to keep fighting.  Carr not going to UM isn't a huge surprise - reading the tea leaves for months it never felt like he wanted to come to UM and deal with that legacy.  Moore leaving sucks but once Gattis left it did feel like there was a lack of enthusiasm with him.

I do think a lot of the complaints about NIL are coming from people who just want something to blame and have apparently moved on from blaming Harbaugh talking to the Vikings because no recruit has seemingly brought that up or cared.  Yes, could UM be sneakier with the NIL rules in the state?  Sure, but also expecting a school like UM to flout state law like that is unrealistic.  If you want to see that change then complain to your state rep.

In the end if UM wins on the field they'll get good players.  The schools really "killing" it in recruiting right now that aren't perennial powers are Tennessee and Miami, two schools that have been dysfunctional for years now and don't look like they're going to have amazing turn-around years this season.  So while the money might be good I do wonder if a bunch of these kids will take a look at those programs when they're 8-4 and wonder if the money is really that different when the end result is the Alamo Bowl or whatever.

We made the playoffs last season. This years recruiting is by far worse than any other playoff team since the 4 team playoff system was devised. Even when MSU made the playoffs they had a much bigger bounce up to number 8, if I'm not mistaken. I can't believe we may not even reach number 40 and will be behind the likes of Texas Tech and Iowa State. This cannot continue next season even if we only lose one or two games this season and make a NY6 bowl game. If NIL is ignored by Michigan our on field records will return back to the RR years.

Michigan gonna Michigan. Get used to it. The administration thinks their morally superior frothy rancid shits don't stink. They must follow their Michigan Man standards that absolutely no one is holding them to even if it means shooting themselves in the foot over and over. They must create a facade of compliance to the all powerful and moral NCAA that we kneel before with an open eager mouth ready to take whatever they give us.  All the while the universities president can fuck his subordinate and our team doctor fingerbanged kids for decades.  But paying players to play a dangerous sport that we exploit for entertainment even though 83% already have CTE by the time they leave college is beyond the pale. A transformational experience indeed.

Sounds as if the program and the booster/NIL collectives need a better intermediary, Courtney Morgan probably would’ve done great there.  I wonder if having a coach (Elston) as the director of recruiting dampens this.  I know Elston was known as a very organized and active recruiter at ND.

Let’s not forget the portal.  Kids will get offers to leave and will take them.   We have this season and it’s likely to get really tough.    Expect a lot of attrition sadly

I don't know why people think Michigan is the only team that will feel negative effects of NIL. That will affect all teams. If one guy didn't get a great NIL package and then performs well, another school will try to poach him with a better offer. The transfer portal will become free agency, with no salary caps.

Wow. What a meltdown here and in the front page. Get out and do something else. We will worry about this December after we win the B1G championship again.
