1)Better: Win B10 or Win B10 Tourney? 2) How Lunardi has MSU 8 seed, but their NET is 84?

First question, is it looked on more favorably to win the Big Ten regular season, or to win the Big Ten Tourney?  Winning the Big Ten tourney really does nothing except guarantee you a spot in the tourney and help you move up/down a little in seeding based on record and who you beat/lose to, correct?

Is their a separate banner for winning the B10 tourney?

Second question, how in the F does Lunardi have MSU a projected 8th seed if the NET is 84?  Isnt the NET ranking pretty much gospel for the NCAA selection committee now?  You kind of need a NET or 50 ish to get in since some lesser conference winners with 100+ NET rankings will be taking up a bunch of the 64 spots correct?

It is a "down year" for a lot of teams in college basketball.  As much as MSU has struggled, there are not many more deserving teams to get in over them in the ACC, Pac-12, or even a conference like the AAC.

I would take the regular season championship over the league tournament championship, although both are good achievements. The league championship is won over months of competition and against all teams.

Eye of the beholder.

I always find the BTT way more fun but the regular season is a true test.

I think it is looked on more favorably to win the Big Ten regular season than it is to win the Big Ten Tourney.  The seeds are already in place before the tournament championship game starts with the outcome of the game potentially making a minor change in seeding.

Winning the Big Ten tourney is a thrill especially if you attend because of the number of games in a period of a few days.  I went to every game in the 2017 tournament and it was a lot of fun.  The early games of the tournament can affect teams on the bubble.

There is a separate banner for winning the B10 tourney.  A school can essentially make a banner for whatever it wants although I haven't yet seen one that says "Beat STAEE at Breslin".

Thanks to Chris Webber, Staee is a brand name in NCAA basketball and brand names always get more favorable seeding than they deserve.  That has run in our favor in football Bowl selection.  It always helps Notre Dame except in Hockey which has a strict selection based on Pairwise rankings.

IIRC the B1G is one of the few (if not the only) conference that more often than not values the regular season banner over the tournament one. 3-5 games in 3-5 days based on where you're ranked, and most of the contenders are locked in to the tournament already and might appreciate the extra day off of not even making the Sunday Championship. It's also best team (now) vs. a best team (whole season) debate.

At the end of the day, it depends on the scenario. Did Michigan/MSU split the regular season title? You're damn straight the B1G tourney counts as the tie breaker (real champ). Did MSU play a much easier schedule than you, well then the B1G tourney is all that matters. Did Michigan play the easier schedule that year, well it was still a dog fight to come out on top this regular season.

Win both and flaunt it!

Win neither and go to the Final Four, and who cares about the B1G?

Crash your plane, play your first game in practice unis, win 4 games in 4 days, and it might just be the most important trophy in the world.

1) Regular Season Champ = best team, better accomplishment

Conference Tourney Champ = Hottest team, and does influence seeding a bit  (what have you done for me lately?)

2) Because he's projecting where they will end up, not where they are now.

NET rankings swing all over the place (way more so than polls) as sample size increases and don't project ANYTHING forward looking.  They were a useless mess when they used to release them each week starting at the beginning of the season.

I think it depends. On balance, I'd say regular season because it's over months and less subject to random events. But, if the choice were hypothetically between finishing let's say third in the BT regular season and winning the BTT versus winning the regular season and losing the first game in the tourney, I would choose the first option. The tourney is more fun for me as fan.

I put much more value to winning the Big Ten Tournament than winning the Big Ten regular season championship. I also grew up a Maryland fan and in the ACC the regular season was merely about getting the best possible ACC tournament seeding.

Would love to see MSU miss the tournament. Unfortunately they will be given a lot of latitude and may still sneak in even if the don’t deserve it. It is still hard to figure them out. They really needed that Purdue win to get back on track but pissed down their leg instead. I still think they will win a couple games they should not and will play Michigan very tough.

1) I personally would rather see Michigan win the regular season. Mostly because it happens so rarely. I was a student in the mid-80s Tarpley/Joubert era. I was perpetually frustrated by Michigan having its home game with Indiana in the first week of January. Bobby Knight would use his Jedi mind tricks to eke out a win, and the Conference title was already out of reach. You knew just as sure as the sun rising in the east that: 1) NO ONE was beating IU in Bloomington with the home whistle (and the Hoosiers being consistently very good to great); and 2) Michigan was NOT making up two games on IU the rest of the way.

2) Lazy reporting and cronyism.
