We beat MSU, Wisconsin and PSU by a combined score of 101-27. Nearly 25 points per victory. Better than 3 TDs each. Those opponents averaged 9 points per game on offense against Michigan. That's an awful lot of luck.

That’s the quote of the day.   Until very late in the year when people started to catch on, I made a fair amount of $$ taking Army and the spread.  It was practically a license to print money.    Army is a very good football team.   UM will win the game but like most teams, they  probably won’t cover the spread.

In 1996, Greg Mattison was on the coaching staff and we had a disappointing season. He left for a major rival after the season was over, and then we won the NC in 1997.

In 2018, Greg Mattison was on the coaching staff and we had a disappointing season. He left for a major rival after the season was over, so now we'll win the NC in 2019.

It's science.

Unfortunately playing OSU, ND, PSU, & MSU (and maybe Wiscy & Army) are too many other teams on that list that give UM an opportunity to slip up.  Bottom line is it's highly unlikely UM gets there without beating OSU, which they have only done once in the last 15 years.  I don't like those odds.  I'll take a win over OSU and/or B1G title, even if it means a few losses and missing the playoffs.

One of the advantages of a pessimistic outlook (which is not uncommon on mgoblog) is that it should make one glad when the team exceeds our gloomy predictions.

Unfortunately, it does not seem to. Instead, with every win expectations rise, only to be dashed by an inevitable defeat, followed by bitter condemnation of the players, coaches, referees, other fans, the football gods, . . . .

Seems like an exercise in frustration.

Or we could feel grateful that all these student athletes (both male and female) drive themselves so hard to improve and that coaches do what they can to help them, despite challenges and their own personal limitations. And that they are eager to come back again and finish the task they missed out on at the end of last season.

As many have pointed out, this team has question marks, particularly on the DL, and the absence of so many players at the spring game reminds us uncomfortably of the impact of injuries on a team's prospects. On the other hand, the Offence is experienced and looks ready to take a significant step forward this year, and if they can avoid too many damaging injuries (I wonder how close the game against OSU would have been had Chase and Gary not been hobbled by injuries?), then who knows?

They came very close in 1964, and they did it in 1997.

Will they do it again in 2019?

Probably not, but that is no reason not to try, and for us to cheer them on. They certainly have a better chance than most other teams.

Predictions at this point in the year have more to do with increasing the publisher's web traffic than foosball analysis. There are too many off-season question marks across the B1G to make reliable predictions ahead of actual football times.

But, I mean . . . we're all bored and starved for content, so I'll take whatever I can get. Especially if it's optimistic.
