The OL were bad but some of the pressures/sacks weren't on them tbh. The first sack was mostly on Shea for not understanding down/distance and formation. It's an empty set and he has to know that there's a free rusher on the frontside. What did he do? Ran backward for a sack that was out of FG range.

Higdon did a poor job of protecting the QB. The INT that Shea threw was 90% Higdon and 10% Ruiz. Ruiz initially helped out Onwenu and failed to get to the free rusher in time and it was compounded with bad block by Higdon. Shea didn't do a good job of avoiding the rush and instead went backward to make a terrible decision to throw the ball.

The 2nd and goal pass play wasn't that bad but the sack weren't on Runyan. It was a slide protection to the right and the OL did enough to hold their block on what was supposed to be a quick pass. Higdon did just enough to put a body on the edge rusher but it could be better. It's on Shea for holding onto the ball too long. Get the ball out to FB or look at TE if he's open then throw the ball away. Since he didn't throw the ball away, he took a sack that many thought was on Runyan when it wasn't.

Shea has nice arm and can run, but his tendency to hold onto the ball too long and his somewhat slow processing speed is what hurts the offense at times. You can see a significant difference between DMC and Shea. DMC was much more decisive and knows where to throw the ball post-snap. Sometimes, that's not the case with Shea. Can it get better with experience? Absolutely.

I thought he played well, all things considered. My only critiques:

  • He ran outside of the pocket early a couple of times when stepping up in the pocket or waiting a little bit longer could've been more effective.
  • Running out of field goal range. I expected some of this from him looking at his tape from Ole Miss. Hopefully we can minimize this kind of play going forward.
  • Sense of urgency in clutch moments. He was driving the field well after the ball was snapped, but he was far too relaxed before the snap. Every second counts in those crucial moments.

Other than those three things, I really liked what I saw.

  • He hit Nico on the 52 yard bomb, which was refreshing as a Michigan fan. Sure, it wasn't in stride, but Nico had a chance and made the catch.
  • He was quick and decisive after the snap. Seemed to make good reads.
  • Extended plays. When he's not running backwards out of field goal range, he was extending plays and giving the receivers extra time to get open.

It should be fun to watch this team over the next couple of weeks. Hopefully they find an offensive rhythm against WMU, SMU, and Nebraska. After that, the only other cakewalks are Rutgers and Indiana. Northwestern is always tough at their house, and Maryland surprised me this Saturday. I don't need to bring up the other games on the schedule.

Let's just hope the team takes it one game at a time.

The struggles of JBB and Runyan have been well documented but what hasn't been talked about enough is the problems in pass protection at the RB position. Higdon's pass pro on Saturday was a debacle. I can't believe Harbaugh said he was pleased with it today.

Can't understand the Shea criticism, he looks good. If anything he was asked to do too little.

The offense actually seemed to move well at times, but there was something disjointed about the game - some bad breaks in key moments ... UoM got to the 20 yard line twice and ended up with 0 points (sack, botched FG).

After watching the video, I have to admit I’m a little more impressed with Patterson than I was in watching him during the game.

Im going to try to keep optimistic.

Opening weekend OSU kills their opponent and both MSU & Penn State were lucky to escape with wins. All 3 play lower caliber programs. Who do we play opening day? Frick’in Notre Dame in South Bend. I’m trying to put it all in perspective.

I feel bad for Shea.

You can see that he really wanted this game. So much emotion and command all game long. Everything from pumping the guys up before the game, to making sure guys were getting lined up and ready fast enough.  You can tell this is his offense.

He was welcomed into AA with an offensive line that has turnstile OTs yet he still had the offense in a position to tie it up late.

Then to add onto it, the guy battled cramps for much of the 2nd half but still didn't want to be sidelined.

I think he's going to be great here, and I'm positive that it's not going to take long for him to become one of our favorite wolverines.

Great post!

These are the exact characteristics I noticed of Shea during the game as well. Very emotional, high energy guy. He really wanted this game, and had it not been for that last fumble ,who knows?

I feel bad for Western Michigan. I think Patterson is about to go insane. Also, I am officially on the Nico Collins bandwagon. He's going to be our top receiver.

Wow, we were driving again at the end of the game. If patterson doesnt fumble im pretty sure we score on that drive. We could have won this game. Patterson is way better than anyone we had last year IMO

As everyone had said, we missed to many opportunities to score. The wr screen at 2nd and 10 where the de batted it down was open. Score there, and it's 21 to 17.

We need to finish drives, and this song is all too familiar.

Let's Go Blue, Beat Western and show is some of the issues are fixed and I will feel allot better. We really miss Mason Cole.

I don't really put the INT on Patterson. If you look at the play closely, #4 (a linebacker) gets past a double from Higdon and Ruiz to pressure Patterson and force the INT.

Bottom Line: Pass Pro sucks

I like Patterson and what the offense can be with him but I don't have much faith anymore that the coaches can get the most out of him or players available to them.

Shea threw for 225 with that OL play. Very impressed given the circumstances and at times questionable play calling. I wish they would just put some young guys at the tackles for these next three games, get through the growing pains, and gear up for the tough stretch.

Three blown ref calls:

1) Targeting
2) No PI called in the Endzone.
3) No PI called on the 4th down.

NONE of those plays were shown as a replay by NBC, while every potential Michigan bad play was repeated ad nauseam.

Not great, but not as bad as I thought. I think many of the issues came with pre-snap calls. When the pre-snap call was made correctly, the protection was ok (not great, but ok). When made incorrectly, it was a disaster. Take into account (a) A team with new parts first time playing together, including Ruiz first start as a center (b) Away night game in a loud stadium (c) Top 5 defense last year returning 10 of 11 players... Not like this was Toledo playing us at the Big House or Utah State.

The coaches learned a lot about the team and have a lot of quality film to use as teachable moments that will serve us well later in the season. Here's to hoping, and to some creampuffs to iron things out before our next major test.
