Or is it related to any off-field issues or ongoing investigation(s)? Seems like an odd time to relieve English of his duties under ordinary circumstances. Brutally hard on kids who committed to him and who have devoted years to that program. With games yet to be played. We are used to these things as football-personnel chess moves in the press. Like trading for a second-round draft pick. But these are real lives we are talking about.

Refuses to drop to 1AA status. The only team they've beat is an 1AA. They can't compete with recruiting in the Mac. Their the 7th choice for recruits in the state! Eastern is in a dog fight with the likes of Albion and Olivet for players! They average a solid 3 thousand in attendance! Which I don't know why they haven't been force to drop a division? To keep 1A status you must average 15 thousand a game. They been piss poor for 15 years. Sabin couldn't turn that train wreak around! The worst program year in and year out in the country!

Regardless of what you think of English, he was not smart to take that job if he wanted to succeed.  I doubt anyone is ever going to win there.  It has to be one of the worst jobs in Div 1-A (yes I know FBS or whatever).  Maybe it was the only head job he could ever get, but now it WILL be the only one he ever gets, for sure.

Yes, this is far beneath UMich:

How does it compare to CMU, WMU, and the rest of the conference? I don't know. Anyone?

I'm not sure why so many people are (seemingly) assuming that Ron's performance is at or above what one could expect for EMU's ceiling. It has to be one of the worst FBS jobs at baseline, but shouldn't they be able to do a _little_ better than they did the past five years?

You'd think that the 2-star and low 3-star run-off from Michigan (Metro Detroit, especially) and parts of Ohio would be enough for more than a handful of 4-4 conference seasons. I would, anyway. They can sell a piece of MACtion.

New AD flexing muscle, former OSU asst. I do think EMU should go 1AA. Just to much required ( money, recruiting, facilities, fan involvement) to compete at FBS level. Not doing school, students or alums any favors by consistent losing. Get competitive in 1AA, create some differentiation with other schools and give the students and alums a reason to get involved and come to games. Keep bball, baseball and other sports at D1. It's a shame that EMU cannot be more competitive. WMU and CMU are not directly in the shadows of a Big10 school. Harder for EMU to create identity. One if my degrees is from EMU so I am not just being critical. Either turn it around or redefine the program.

Why do white coaches whose first jobs are in the MAC get opportunities at schools where they can win, while black coaches seem to end up at EMU, where a reincarnated Bo Schembechler would have trouble finishing .500 every year?

EMU is such a cesspool that it is impossible to recruit the kind of athletes you need to win.  Every time I see EMU counted as an "opportunity" when a black coach is hired, it makes me want to vomit.  EMU has probably ruined Ron English's career, while people of equal talent who got opportunities at better MAC schools will move up to second-tier programs in major conferences, and receive the requisite healthy raises.

Ron English deserved better; I made a similar comment when he got the job.  Sadly, he will now be used behind the scenes as an example of why it is "better" to recycle the same old mediocre, "safe" coaches with less skin pigment.

Excuse me while I go hug porcelain.
