but Messi is and will be the greatest when he's done. Pele can screw himself (which he'd probably do if he could considering his ego).
Okay mean part is over. I love Cesc, and am glad he is back home, but my nod probably goes to Xavi. Guy can create scoring opportunites like no one else.

Gary Hooper needs a chance. 1 chance and it's level, I promise you.

That is all.

And Celtic is likely out of it. Juve up 2-0.

Okay, I'll bite . . . Why wouldn't you root for a fellow Scottish team like Michigan fans generally root for Ohio State against SEC teams, for example? Doesn't make sense to me - countrymen are supposed to stick together, no?

Celtic vs. Rangers used to be Catholics vs. Protestants in Glasgow (and still is in a way). Until about 1990 it featured an all Catholic Celtic team against an all Protestant Rangers team. It might be the world's most deadly rivalry.

I think I knew that background (forgot) but didn't realize that it still dominates the fan base.
Oh, and no religion!

Yeah, add in Irish nationalism from the fact that the club used to be made up of mostly Irish immigrants and it gets fun. The other two posts below mine summarized it much better though.

The Celtic-Rangers rivalry has undertones that go as deep as they come in the world of sports. These undertones are cultural, and religious in nature and, to be honest, the rivalry eclipses Michigan-Ohio in terms of pure intensity and hatred.

They could be Rangers.

+1 for "this is why the Pope resigned"
-1 for the fact that Rangers are still playing against part time plumbers behind high school parking lots.

Well played Juve. Juve up 3 now.

Lily livered ref at Celtic. Juventus defensive wrestling should have resulted in at least one penalty. Apply the laws ref. stain on game

A loss for Celtic is a win for Rangers..

Except that since we can be pretty sure the second place team in the SPL will get laughed out of the qualifying rounds for the next couple years, Rangers need Celtic to rack up all the coefficient points they can get if they want two UCL spots left when they get back up.

Well, once you've beaten Barcelona, getting motivated to play a team of mere mortals may be too much to expect. 'Salright, then...Champions League play after New Year's is unheard of in the SFA these days...glad it was Celtic representing.

Wow, what a dramatic ending at the Mestalla. Valencia still need to grab 2 goals is Paris, but that is not impossible.
Edit: Goals not gals...

Such a demoralizing loss for Celtic. Put everything into it. Now I fear they'll be on the end of a real pasting in the return leg.

to give up football for Lent was a bit rash. No matter...they've given a good account of themselves overall...I'm used to them being out of the UEFA (sorry, EUROPA) Cup at this point of the campaign, so this year was a nice distraction. We'll always have the Barca tie.
February 12th, 2013 at 5:07 PM ^
The Spanish league has to be the best in all of Europe, right? By my count they have 4 out of 16 still standing (Malaga, Valencia, Real, Barca).
