Shane Morris Out For Season?

Submitted by Everyone Murders on

Most of us knew that he was battling mono, but the reports were that he was playing through it (as he did against Brother Rice).  Today Kyle Meinke reports (via a Freep Article) that Shane Morris's coach is pessimistic regarding Morris's ability to play for the rest of his senior season.  Per his coach

“He won’t play this week," De La Salle coach Paul Verska told the Free Press, “and really, I’m not counting on him coming back the rest of the year."

Tough break for the future Wolverine, but assuming his bout with mono is as rough as most this seems like the right decision for his long-term health and career.  A tough break after he put so much effort into getting ready for the season and all the 7-on-7s.

Here's to hoping his coach is wrong, and Shane M. makes a speedier-than-expected recovery.

Mono definitely could take him out for the season. If its serious it could legitimately not be safe for him to play for 1-2 months depending on if his spleen stays enlarged for that time. Even when it is technically safe for him to play because his spleen is back to normal, he will be drained and extremely tired. I hope for his safety that he doesn't go back and play before he's healthy though, because an enlarged spleen is life threatening.

Most Athletes who contract mono should refrain from contact sports for 1 to 2 months to reduce the risk of splenetic rupture. Shane will probably start non-contact drills in a few weeks. Basically the high school football season is over at the end of 6 weeks. I wish he could finish high school early and enroll at Michigan in January. If not, he will have the spring and summer to get back into playing shape.

Missed a week of school. Day I came back, track coach had me pole vaulting vs. the #2 and #7 pole vaulters in the state in a dual meet. I took 2nd that day. Broke my pr by over a foot. In conclusion, iron sharpens iron.

I missed my first term freshman year because of a horrible case of mono.  Trust me, there is no good time to get mono.  But better he get it out of the way NOW than during his college career.

Btw, I'd like to also point out that missing my first term with mono did not improve my propensity for beer, weed, and "iffy" chicks after Rick's closed on weekend nights.  Sometimes Wednesdays too.

I was diagnosed with mono over two months ago and am now just starting to feel better. No alcohol until the end of November and no contact sports until the end of January. Hopefully his parents and coaches realize the seriousness of this sickness and he follows the instructions given to him by his doctor. This will be especially hard to do considering it is the end of his highschool career and all the parties that come with it.

Basically, listen to your doctor and he should be fine by the start of spring ball.
