Virgina Tech now asking fans or anyone to buy "Proxy Tickets"
The Hokies have only sold 9337 of their 17500 Sugar Bowl ticket allotment and are now asking(begging) their fans to buy proxy tickets for $120 each that will then be donated to New Orleans area charities and military personnel.
Press release:
BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced today that it has sold 9,337 of its 17,500 tickets to the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl. Over the years, Virginia Tech has earned the reputation of being a football program that enjoys a strong following to bowl games. In order to maintain that recognition, the Athletics Department is asking Hokie fans that cannot make this year’s Allstate Sugar Bowl to consider purchasing proxy tickets. Tech Director of Athletics Jim Weaver, head football coach Frank Beamer, and the entire football coaching staff, will each be purchasing a pair of proxy tickets in order to support this initiative.
All proxy tickets will be distributed to military and charitable organizations in the greater New Orleans area. To order your proxy tickets, please log on towww.hokietickets.com or call the Athletics Ticket Office at (540) 231-6731 or 1-800 VA TECH4 (828-3244).

Ah, where to begin?
We got spoiled and complacent. By the time of the 2007 Rose Bowl, it was our third Rose Bowl in four years. It was also the year where we lost out on going to the NC game and had to "settle" for the Rose Bowl.
Those were the days.

Remind me again why Virginia Tech was picked over Boise or KSU?
But on the bright side, if Va Tech doesn't sell its portion, maybe Michigan fans can buy them and turn the Superdome into Big House Jr.

consider buying four tickets as long as the VT administration does not insist that I wear one of those f**king turkey suits.
I cannot think of that team without thinking of all of their fans with some type of turkey costume item on. LOL. Love that they have been surving the past ten years on having a rep for defense and special teams. But when you look at the stats they are crap for special teams.

I have to think the extremely negative publicity Va Tech has received for getting the bid has hurt ticket sales. After that performance vs. Clemson, a portion of their fans have to hear "they travel well" and be thinking "not for this crap we don't."
Still glad we have them over K-State, even if the Sugar has buyer's remorse. They have better athletes and with Beamer/Foster are infinitely more interesting from a schematic standpoint against our offense.

Keep in mind that this is bad for Michigan as well. Now that VT can't sell any seats, it means that the general public seats are going to be pretty cheap, meaning that Michigan fans will buy stubhub seats instead of buying seats at face through the AD. The seats we don't sell, we have to eat. Michigan's athletic department has a lot to lose of people don't start buying tickets.

Is there a legal block for UM to sell the remaining tix on StubHub or some other ticket outlet?

Haven't we nearly sold out of our allotment anyway? It was at 75% in the middle of last week, I have to think they're almost gone, if not already gone by this point.

with the suck part toward the UM ad...however in one perspective, perhaps the blinds have been pulled on this bullshit called the BCS and the complete powermongering...granted this year we came out a major upside landing a BCS bowl that you could argue wether we've earned or not...love the ten wins and in my heart I know we COULD be 12-0 with a few plays/healthy players/attitude, etc...however, look at years past and even some of this years' matchups based completely on MONEY...this system, the NCAA, the BCS have become so corrupt/money hungry....they get what they deserve...sadly though as you said, in the end our AD is the one that foots the bill because the BCS has covered their own ass with these sales stipulations...and in the end we all have to look at helping the AD by purchasing face tix instead of saving a buck and taking the family because the money bloat has failed miserably...tough call.

University of Cincinnati is doing this too. They're supposed to be for students and I suppose there's a donation element too. Must be desperate to sell anything at this point.

Judging from their attendance last year and finishing the season with a loss how could the Sugar Bowl people not have anticipated this happening? They should have put Boise in.

they couldn't have, Boise didn't win their conference and thus were ineligible.

I wonder how all the other bowls are doing. I'm sure a lot of the bowls struggle to fill the seats. We'll probably hear more about the Sugar Bowl, though, because of the fuss stirred up. By BCS ranking, though, Michigan should be the school people are looking at, since we were ranked two slots lower than VT. It looks like we will sell our allotment, though, or come near enough to not create outrage.

KSU and Boise are looking at these numbers and feeling even more steamed at this point. I have to think one of those teams would come closer to selling their allotment than slightly over half. I would think Boise could sell them all actually, and not just to BSU fans and students but also people that would be interested in seeing a much-hyped Boise team play. Wow, this could be pretty underwhelming from an attendance standpoint, which hurts both schools really.
