The Wolverine you're most thankful for

Submitted by MGoCooper on

Simply put, who is the Wolverine in any sport, that you are most thankful for? (Coaches not included)

I'll have to say Charles Woodson. He's my favorite Michigan athlete of all time, by far.

Changed the program like no player before or since.

Honorable mention to John Navarre, who stepped up and took four years of undeserved shit that should have been heaped on Drew Henson and the coaching staff that left us with no QB. And somehow also became a decent quarterback against all odds.

Helped us win alot of games that we wouldnt't have won without him. He was fun to watch. I compare him in college to Calvin Johnson in the pro's for his team

John Navarre was always one of my favorites. Played much earlier than he should have and took quite a bit of abuse. Finally beat OSU his senior year. Although how a 6'6" guy consistently gets passes batted down, I'll never know.

Also, Ryan Van Bergen. Kids knows BS when he sees it when he called out former players for not being there during the RR years.

Anthony Carter, the first fast receiver/deep threat I remember at Michigan, and the Indiana catch was the most exciting play I ever witnessed. Now a days...Drew Dileo, He da man!!

Denard Robinson. The kid is the face of the program right now and in my mind is the perfect person to be that. Kid is humble, gives credit to coaches and teammates only, and has a smile that can create world peace. People can criticize him for his play and that's he's not a quarterback, but the kid just loves football. God bless him.

Three choices for your consideration:

1. Before my time- Rick Leach. I grew up watching his highlights and I loved how he ran the option. True Michigan legend.

2. In my time- Charles Woodson. I was only a toddler when Desmond played, but was becoming the rabid Michigan fan I am today when #2 played for Michigan.

3. On this team? Ryan Van Bergen. He and Martin have quietly led a much-improved defense all year.

I've been an Ohio resident for most of my life. The football tradition in this state is no joke. I don't think anywhere else is close. Football is inside us from a young age. I played the best HS football in the state, against the best competition. I think people here are a different breed than most places from fans, to the athletes, to the general mindset of its people. Growing up in that environment has an effect on you. There's a certain pride.

I think you saw similar characteristics of Ohio bred football people in Charles Woodson. You saw it in Bo Schembechler. You saw it in Jim Harbaugh. The list goes on. Those guys just had this looseness and a confidence that set them apart. I didn't see a weak arrogance in those guys like I have in others. It's as if all these greats were saved from the dark side by going to Michigan, and had they ended up in the Columbus death star, Michigan wouldn't be what they are today. Their contributions coupled with all that Michigan was and had to offer allowed for some magical things to happen.

I fundamentally believe that Michigan molds better young men than Ohio ever has. So, as we go forth, I am looking forward to the continued tradition of great young Ohio prospects see the light, and commiting to Michigan.

Although Ohio football is definitely great, I don't think it gets any bigger or better than Texas. It's a way of life all over this huge state.

<br>As for Michigan players, growing up I loved Anthony Carter. By the time I was in high school and my love for Michigan football was hitting stride I got to watch Desmond do his thing. My favorite all time is unquestionably Charles Woodson though.

Charles Woodson is who got me into Michigan football.  My earliest memories of Michigan was when I was about 7-8 years old, I was a fan of X-men (Wolverine being my favorite), and U of M's uniforms drew me in like no other.  I was too young to realize the difference between NFL and college; sometimes mistaking the Rams for the Wolverines.  I grew up in south Florida with NO connection to Michigan what-so-ever, but I have been a die-hard fan for over 20 years.

Charles Woodson and Nike are Michigan football to me.

...which reminds me, is there anybody out there that is happy being an Adidas school?  Am I the only one grossed out by it?  Joining the likes of University of Tennessee and Notre Dame?  It is, singlehandidly, the ONE thing that vexes me like nothing else about Michigan.  GO BACK TO NIKE.  Was it Adidas that turned our Maze color into "Highlighter"?  fucking morons.
