OT - Kemba Walker finishes his first book
...finishes reading his first book, that is.
This has not prevented him from being on course to graduate in three years. Just how rigorous of an academic institution is UConn?
This is pretty crazy. It would be one thing if he never read a book cover to cover for school even, but this is his first EVER?
Ehhh Reading is over-rated..
sparty...?
is that you???
I can think of at least 1 million books that would have been a better read. Congrats Kemba.
Dicey. But in his defense, in doing research for my PhD I've found that figuring out which parts of a book are important and skipping the rest is a very valuable skill.
Im guilty of reading a book from cover to cover but during my 4 years in college I cant say i read a book all the way through, especially one required for a class
I'm about to graduate law school, and I only remember reading one book cover-to-cover during either law school or undergrad. That book was a summary of another book.
Definitely thought ths was going to be about how he finished writing his first book, quite the contrary.
Same here. I was like "Damn, that's impressive! But what the hell would he be writing a book about??"
Ha, I didn't figure that out until I read your post. Guess I've never read a thread front to back.
Ha - I honestly did not mean for the title to be ambiguous, but it did turn out to be a funny misdirection.
I took the thread title to mean that Walker had just finished writing his first book. My assumption could not be more diametrically opposed to the reality of the situation.
I've read plenty of books cover-to-cover, but I don't think I've ever read an entire textbook. That said, I guess I could see how it might not be too big of a priority for an athlete to read an entire book. Depending on his background, the same could probably be said for his time in elementary/jr high. In fact, I know many people who never bothered to actually read entire books, rather reading portions of it and relying on movies/cliff notes for the rest. These are also people who aren't interested in reading for leisure. More an indictment of our societal woes rather than a criticism of Walker. Sad? Yes. Uncommon? Probably not.
Last book I read was the Book of Lies by UM alumnus Brad Meltzer. Not particularly high-brow, but knocked out the whole thing on my business trip to Europe last week.
I'm sure he had fun coloring all those pages.
I remember when I first read it the author was accused of racism, classism, and generally being a jerk. It is quite an indightment of our educational system. The fact that he finished elementary school--much less junior high or high school without reading a book probably says something about priorities for "student athletes" and the priorities of their "educators".
this is as much of an indictment of the parenting in this country as it is the education system. Neither one is getting the job done right now.
not even Green Eggs and Ham? wtf
I'm guessing he meant an adult-level book. At least I hope so.

To everyone saying that haven't read a book in school, that is much different then never having read a book period.....
Walker didn't say he didn't read whole books just for school. He said, "It is the first book I've ever read." That's it. Not much wiggle room there.
And it's not like he's a math major or engineering where narrative doesn't matter and you skip around to get to problem sets, etc. He's a freaking sociology major! Books about race, culture, history, etc. have got to be part of the core curriculum.
I know he's an athlete and he's going to get paid millions of dollars, but it's pretty patheic on UConn's part, at a minimum.
I was convinced by your title that he had finished WRITING his first book!
"earn his sociology degree"
Explains everything. No hate on soc majors.
Sparty nooo!
I wonder if this also includes math books on order of operation...
Just read this.
that is fantastic
