Wrestling Big Ten Tournament update

Submitted by oriental andrew on March 9th, 2024 at 2:30 PM

I'm no big wrestling fan or anything (although we did have a wrestling unit in middle school and I was a huge WWF/WCW fan, but that's neither here nor there), but I did see that the BTT for wrestling is happening today.

Quarterfinals just concluded and semis are later tonight at 7pm ET. Consolation matches and something called "wrestlebacks" are at 5pm ET. Consolation matches and finals are tomorrow.

Looks like Michigan has 7 wrestlers advancing to the semis out of 8 who competed in the quarters. That seems pretty good. I had to google a few terms.

  • 125lbs - #7-Michael DeAugustino (Michigan) upsets #2-Drake Ayala (Iowa), 4-2
  • 133lbs - #1-Dylan Ragusin (Michigan) d. #8-Tyler Wells (Minnesota), 6-2
  • 141lbs - #5-Sergio Lemley (Michigan) upsets #4-Brock Hardy (Nebraska), 4-2
  • 149lbs - #2-Austin Gomez (Michigan) tf. Joseph Zargo (Wisconsin), 22-6 (6:15) (technical fall is basically mercy rule)
  • 157lbs - #7-Will Lewan (Michigan) pins #2-Michael Blockhus, 4:24 in a major upset
  • 165lbs - #3-Mike Caliendo (Iowa) d. #6-Cameron Amine (Michigan), 5-2 (SV) (this is overtime, stands for "sudden victory")
  • 174lbs - #2-Shane Griffith (Michigan) d. #7-Max Maylor (Wisconsin), 6-1
  • 184lbs - #5-Jaden Bullock (Michigan) upsets #4-Ryder Rogotzke (Ohio State), 8-7
  • 197lbs - No Wolverines in quarters
  • 285lbs - #3-Lucas Davison (Michigan) d. 6-Nick Willham (Indiana), 5-0

Anyway, like I said, not a huge wrestling fan, but will probably watch later tonight if I'm not doing anything else. Looks like we have a few great shots at individual Big Ten titles.

Yup, happened to turn on BTN after doing some early morning yardwork (clearing branches and things from a recent storm) and saw wrestling was on. Was about to change the channel since it was Penn State and Wisconsin or something before I realized it was the BTT. Stuck around and watched some nice matches! I don't know much about it, but it was fun to watch.

I'm such a sucker for post-season Michigan sports.

Standings through session 1:

1. Penn State (83.5)
2. Michigan (70.5)
3. Iowa (57.5)
4. Nebraska (46.5)
5. Minnesota (34.5)
6. Rutgers (31.5)
7. Ohio State (28.5)
8. Maryland (20.5)
9. Wisconsin (16.5)
10. Indiana (16)
11t. Illinois (10)
11t. Michigan State (10)
13. Northwestern (7)
14. Purdue (4)

A semifinal win is worth 7 points at a minimum, and up to 9 points depending on how the wrestler wins. Michigan has 8 semifinalists, Penn State has 9.

The Amine - Caliendo match was so close.  DeAugustino won with points late in the third period and his class had multiple upsets -- iirc, 5, 6, 7 and 9 are in the semis.

Michigan is legitimately in the hunt albeit a big underdog to Penn St.

We have three direct matches with PSU at 125, 133, and 141. We are underdogs in 2/3

The Amine OT loss really stung.

Lewan looks like he is wrestling up to his ability at the right time. -!!!!

The team is really wrestling well

Thabks for posting OP. Penn St has a good site keeping track of the tournament. We have 8 in the SF out of 9 in the QF and 10 total, with 1 (Cam Amines, brother of Olympic Silver Medalist Miles) alive in the wrestlebacks

Twitter link for the SFs. I'll try to embed a screenshot. Amine won his first wrestlebacks and has his last match of today in a few minutes, for the consolation semis.

Great write up for a “not a wrestling fan”!  Cudos for your googling skills.

Go Blue!  Let’s get some individual championships (no ‘ships’) and an overall B1G Championship!!

PS - big wresting fan here as I wrestled in HS.  My oldest son was wrestled varsity when his HS team went to the team State Championship in Georgia.  He won a bunch of matches late in the 3rd period due to his endurance.  Pinned a kid when they were tied late in the third.  Got the take down with 5 seconds to go and then finished him off with the pin.

Michigan puts 4 in the finals (Ragysin at 133, Gomez at 149, Lewan at 157 and Griffith at 174) with 5 more in the consolation semis. PSU has 7 in the finals with 2 in the semis (arguably their best wrestler, Starrochi, is the 10th and he forfeited with injury). Team scores will close with PSU up on M by about 30, and NU behind us by 16 or so. Possible but probably unlikely we catch them, still a great showing by the Wolverines so far this weekend, and still 4 with a chance to be champs, and 9 will wrestle at the NCAAs in a couple of weeks

Final recap - M went 4-1 in the consolation semis, with Deaugustino being the only one wrestling for 5th instead of 3rd. Unfortunately in the finals, while coming close in a few bouts M was unable to claim a single champion, and in fact lost all their matches in the consolations as well except for Davison at HWT. So 4 finished at 2nd, Davison at 3rd, 3 finished 4th, Deaugustino finished 6th, and those 9 will wrestle in the NCAAs

In the team race, M finished second behind Penn St. Go blue!
