Who's heading to New York this weekend?

Submitted by JR's Flow on

As you all know UM Basketball is head to NYC for the second time in this early season to take on Beilein's former team in WVU.

For as good as our basketball team is this season (and it being my first time NYC) I was wondering who's going to NYC this weekend?

What are your plans for the weekend in NYC?

My brother lives in Brooklyn so it was the perfect two birds, one stone situation. I'm really excited to see the new arena and this fantastic team we have.

And if you're of age... Spitzer's Corner after.  Great beer options, although it gets crowded friday nights.

If you're looking for really cheap, but really good food (puerto rican/caribbean), go to El Castillo de Jagua.  Went there all the time when I was a kid.  If you're timid, just go for the cuban sandwich (preferrably sweet plantains.)

I'll be midcourt row 2 (which I think is really like row 6 or something) opposite the benches. Looking forward to checking out the new arena for the first time. Got to see the team win twice at MSG. What a cool opportunity to check them out again during this really fun season!

And just a reminder, Alumni Club is having a pre-game event at the arena (pre-registration required). Food and some special guests will be there:

You'rein luck, there's a TKTS in downtown brooklyn, walkable from Barclays.  I've heard amazing things about Book of Mormon.  I saw Memphis- really liked it.  Wicked was awesome too (NH, of course.)

Sold out way in advance, probably only way is to sell a child and go to a broker.

Not knowing you or what you (and/or) your lady would like, three very different recommendations for which tix are available (Google for reviews or more info):  Peter and the Starcatcher, Once and War Horse (at Lincoln Center).

EDIT:  Here's the Book of Mormon page on broadwaybox.com, a great place to check for discount coupons/codes and links to brokers w/tix for sold-out shows:

Once.

Small theater, good music, and there's an actual bar on the stage where you can get a drink before the show or at intermission. (Though be warned, the Jameson is $15 a pop).

TKTS had day of tix the day I went, as well, so they were half price (given the holiday theater crowds, I'm dubious that this will be the case)

GF is in the biz so I see or hear about most of the shows. If you're a high roller (I'm not), tix on the secondary market for Book of Mormon or Wicked are a can't miss.

I recommend Chaplin, Newsies, or Once if you're not set on seeing one of the classic shows (ie. Lion King, Phantom of the Opera).

Peter and the Starcatcher is a really good play - not a musical, but incredibly charming

I'll be there.  The stadium is sick, big open concourse, great food, and feels small / very intimate as it's more vertical than horizontal.  Not a bad seat in the house, and it looks very slick too.  It obviously doesn't have the history but as far as facilities go it way outclasses the Garden.

I live just a 20-minute walk away. I'm bringing my older boy (he's 13) for his first live ball game. We'll see if he makes it through the whole thing or not. Regardless, I will be there for the duration.

at the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues for 3-4 hours this Saturday, but it won't be for the game... I will be shopping at the Target and Best Buy across the street.

Gotta get my Christmas shopping done while my fiancee is out of town.

However, I will be shouting "Go Blue" as I walk past the crowds with my Target bags on my way home.

Have the tickets and all set to go....

...but my sister is expecting her first.  (she is 4 days past her due date).  She would not do that to me, would she?  I was a good older brother to her....

Driving from Ohio tomorrow. Staying at a hotel on W 51st St near Rockefeller Plaza. Taking my wife to an open call for CBS Sat morning, roaming around the city while she's there, then maybe to the game later on. I really want to go and will be disappointed in myself if I don't go to the game while I'm in town

If anyone is staying at the Plaza Hotel there, be careful, they have the finest idiots in NYC working there. Can you believe they let an 8 year old check in with his fathers credit card??!!!

Its actually an awesome experience. Sure there are idiots, but there are idiots at every major football game every saturday and sunday. We might as well cancel the Notre Dame game now because some frat kids are going to puke before entering the stadium.

I went 2 years ago and it was a blast. Now mind you, I had my fill of fun by 10pm, so I can't speak for late night antics. However, going location to location (mostly at bars or empty parks - because its dang cold outside!) singing carols. The highlight of the night was taking over the subway singing carols - to the appreciation of the non-Santas also there.

Don't judge the masses by the idiots around them.

Live in the midst of its route. So I've participated, if not voluntarily. It only takes one group of assholes to ruin an impression of an event. And I've seen a lot more than that. Drunk Santas weaving down the middle of the street swinging at cars. Drunk Santas fighting at 2 AM jn front of my building. Drunk Santas passed out on the sidewalk in the afternoon, and all kinds of stories about random groping and harassment are common. And it seems to have gotten worse the last few years.

I'll definitely be there knocking out to things at once, taking my almost three month your old with my dad to see her great grandmother for the first time and will swing by to watch the game also. Should be a damn good weekend.

I will be there.  I don't know what my plans are since I am getting in Sat afternoon and leavin Sun afternoon.  Probably my plans will involve drinking beers.

Highjacking this:  heading to Ann Arbor for the Michigan/WMU game.  Any "must see" bars/restaurants for two newbies from South Carolina to experience?  I, myself have been to AA many times but it's been mainly for football.  We'll have plenty of time roaming around Ann Arbor.  Ideas?
