WBB blasts Stony Brook, 86-48 in WNIT First Round

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

MIchigan Women's Basketball destroyed Stony Brook tonight at Crisler Center, 86-48.

Shannon Smith had 13 assists(!). If Michigan wins their next game, they will have 3 consecutive 20+ win seasons for the first time in program history.

Michigan will face duquesne on Monday night at Crisler at 7pm on MGoBlueTV.

WNIT is Game-by-game basis like the NIT.

Like the NIT before the NCAA bought it, there are no seeds. It goes by records (I believe). The WNIT is not owned by the NCAA.

So should Michigan beat duquesne, they would most likely travel to bowling green who was an NCAA bubble team.

The decision on who gets to host often comes down to attendance. Michigan had 1,175 at the Stony Brook game; Bowling Green had 1,125 at its first-round game. If the round-two games are similarly close in attendance, I'd expect Michigan to get the nod on hosting.

I was in attedance along with half a row worth of Maize Ragers. Lotta fun when  the ladies play this well. Crisp offense. I don't know the final stat line, but at one point we had 20 assists on 23 made baskets. I wish I could go to the Monday game, but alas senior year engineering does not let up.

For the game, Michigan had 28 assists on 33 made baskets. According to the radio announcer, the second half was even better—18 assists on 18 made baskets. That's not something you see very often.

Also in regard to assists, the 13 assists by Shannon Smith set a new single-game record for a Wolverine. According to the game notes, she also had the first point-assist double-double for a Wolverine since December 2001.

I love this win because Stony Brook used to be a pretty big rival for my school in football (and by rival I mean we could never beat them, until last year). Except they just moved to the CAA so that they could not be in literally the worst conference in D II football.

Other than a few too many unforced turnovers in the first half, a really strong game for the women.

Does anyone know what the technical was called for right after Stony Brook scored the first basket?
