Vince Helmuth

Brian, you have Vince Helmuth listed as a DT on the 2009. Can you (or anybody) tell me if this is accurate. I have not seen anything that said he was moving to DT, though it would make sense considering he's in the same class as Moundrous and clearly not beating him out at FB before they graduate.

I've always been a little disappointed with Vince--he was the #1 rated fullback coming out of high school. Moundrous has certainly exceeded expectations, so I guess that's made it hard for Vince to break through.

When it comes to the recruiting rankings and the fullback position, it's my understanding they usually give it to guys who were tailbacks in high school but project to be too big and therefore too slow (in the minds of the scouts) to be college RBs. In other words it's a hard position to project because it's really for the coaches to determine once the player arrives on campus; no other position relies so much on intangibles (brains and balls) and not measurables. I seem to recall Brandon Minor was also the #1 rated fullback on rivals, and one of the reasons he chose Michigan was because LC and Co. promised to give him a look at RB.

FWIW, Rivals still has Helmuth listed as a FB. Rodriguez had said that Helmuth's move to DT was for practice purposes and because of some minor depth issues. He said at the time that it wasn't necessarily permanent. As far as I'm aware, no other official word has been given.

Last I heard Helmuth was playing DE on the practice team towards the end of the season. Although they might have moved him to DT for the 2009 yr due to lack of depth.
