Using boxing gloves in practice to train DBs not to hold

Submitted by crg on
Interesting concept that Clemson is using now (apparently appropriated from Belichek's staff). I'm curious if the UM defensive staff had considered it (though holding doesn't seem to be a big problem at the moment). Has anyone else seen this employed at other schools (or HS's)? Could this work with OL practice also, where holding is a much bigger problem? https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/10/12/16464264/clemson-d…

I sometimes have my DBs do boxing training in the offseason to improve the "violence" in their hands as I like to call it. But I don't see the point in having someone practice NOT committing a penalty, aside from maybe punt or FG block plays. You obviously don't want them holding but imo, if theyre using their eyes, hands, and feet properly, they won't need to hold. Those three have to work in conjunction with one another, otherwise you better hold or interfere or SOMETHING! Just don't let him catch my ball! Now..on the line!
