UFR Scouts likes Jonas Mouton

Submitted by the monarch on

Article on ESPN says that, upon further review, Scouts Inc likes what they see in Mouton:

We missed on him,” Muench said. “I don’t know I would have taken him that high, but it wouldn’t be fair to say it was a big reach.”

Muench, who said other NFL teams coveted Mouton in addition to San Diego, said there was a couple of reasons why Scouts Inc. under-ranked Mouton. They initially looked at Mouton, 6-foot-1, 237 pounds, as an outside linebacker, which several teams did as well. But Mouton will likely play inside linebacker for the Chargers’ 3-4 defense. Also, Muench said Mouton doesn’t have elite athletic ability and he may have been downgraded because Michigan’s defense was so poor.

“But look at him again, I think he is a guy who can be a contributor,” Muench said. “He has good instincts and he’s a good tackler … We can see what the Chargers liked in him.”

Was actually pretty surprised--but thrilled--to see him go so high as well. Here's hoping he kick-starts a new age of Michigan NFL alumni success.

He took more flack than he deserved and was often the scape goat in mostly Obi's blown plays. I've met him a few times and he's a really nice person, hope the best for him, loved seeing that pick so high.

I think Mouton is a player with potential at the next level.  He needs to sharpen his tackling skills like any defensive player out of college.

Definitely athletic and has playmaking potential. Having said that, I think saying he only needs to "sharpen" his tackling skills is a bit generous. He probably needs to acquire, whittle, sharpen, then hone his tackling...it was rough. A lack of continuity and GERG's focus on plush rodents probably didn't help. He probably was a solid pick. He'll hopefully get the development & attention he deserves. I also happen to know, on a personal level, he's a great guy and couldn't be nicer.

Jonas has talent and with any form of actual coaching he'll improve dramatically.  As a second round pick the expectations are going to be high for him out of the gate.  I'm hoping that he turns into a great NFL player.

Yes.  He had basically no coahing in technique, or meangingul position play, out of the linebackers coaches after Lloyd retired.  Our lb coaches (and db for that matter) under Rodriguez were probably detrimental to his development.

due to the poor overall defense our team had last year, even though he led the Big Ten in tackles last year. Under the stellar defensive coaching in San Diego I think he's the perfect fit for them and they're perfect for him. They had the #1 overall defense last year and have no real stars on the team. They're a team of Moutons.

Sometimes on a really bad D a player can look bad and like they are making boneheaded plays because rather than doing JUST their job, they are always trying to do the job of other guys so they seem out of position.

Mouton got a raw deal from Michigan fans this year.  He really wasn't as bad as a lot of people around here wanted to think, although he did make an occasional strange play (like the missed tackle on Jason Ford's long TD run for Illinois).
