TBT: Michigan Basketball 1995 Mall Ad
Two weekends ago I was helping out my dad cleaning out the basement and I found this Mall Poster and Ad with Michigan and Chris Webber from 1995. Nike did an series of ads for schools Like Michigan,UNC and others. This one was at the Footlocker at Belmont Mall in Detroit back in 1995. My brother worked there and he gave that to me one half of my birthday gift.
of the Fleer cards with the background and dim hue.
Sweet! How much did Webber see from Nike for that?
Sweet comment! How much did Anthony Carter see from that picture in your avatar?
Don't know about AC, but Webber definitely was paid by Nike for this ad. He went pro in 1993, two years before this ad came out. (Nike also wasn't Michigan's uniform supplier at the time Webber played here.)
Serious question:
Is there any way that both Webber and Michigan agreed to this ad, signed off on it, and both received compensation? If jmblue is correct that Webber got paid...I can't imagine that U of M would let that ad go without getting a cut...were Webber and U of M partnering to both gain monetarily in 1995?
In the fast food ad with Webber in a yellow #4 jersey clearly only Webber got paid. If the fast food joint wouldn't have had to pay Michigan it would have made more sense to use a Michigan #4 jersey. That's the logic I'm using in assuming U of M would get a cut from the poster (unless it is deemed good promotion for the University so they don't need to get monetary compensation -- but still would have had to agree).
Thoughts anyone?
Nike because U-M's athletic supplier in 1994, the year before this ad came out.
Well Chris was with Nike for a few years and He had his Signature Show with Nike called the AIr Max CW renamed Air Max Sensation when the reissue was out in 2002 or 2003.
Here's his Signature shoe
He was in the NBA and signed with Nike. I think it was called the Varsity Series or something.
Something tells me this thread won't end well though.
This is pretty cool, and actually, I think there were a few variations of this floating around at the time too. One had a maize border, as I recall, with a second panel saying something (can't remember what precisely) - that was at the Foot Locker at Twelve Oaks at one point many years ago, and I think I saw it at Briarwood as well.
didn't match then either

Coach Wheatley had a one as well. See Avatar
