Sylvester Croom Resigns

Submitted by TomVH on
Sylvester Croom has resigned as Head Coach of Mississippi State. Another potential door opener in recruiting. The most recent talk is about JUCO DE from Pahokee, Pernell McPhee. McPhee is committed to Miss. State, but was high on Michigan, this could push us into the front. Josh Boyd, a DT commit, might not play into this, since we're expected to get William Campbell. If you remember he was high on M early on though, and with DeQuinta Jones rumors we'll see what happens here. Who knows how this could play out, but in my opinion it will atleast help with Pernell McPhee.

Or it could be bad news- a new staff down there could have an opening for Hopson, and that would take away one of our best recruiters. (Nevermind- I didn't say that, I didn't give the idea any energy. Didn't happen. Wasn't me. Move along, there's nothing to see here.)

1st year LB coach who was DC at an SEC school and has substantial contacts throughout the south. 1st year LB coach who was complimented by practically every big name recruit we were in the mix for in MS, LA, OK, etc. From an article on Darius Winston: "Winston's interest in U-M stems from his love for Charles Woodson, but the Wolverines made his final five thanks to the recruiting efforts of assistant Jay Hopson. "He's a great person," Winston said of Michigan's linebackers coach. "He's a great recruiter. He seems like he's down to earth. He's very real. He's not just going to tell me what I want to hear. He's just going to tell me what's real." Willie added: "Jay Hop is the coolest cat. Besides (Ole Miss) Coach (Houston) Nutt, he's the coolest coach I've ever seen. My brother was a coach and I got recruited, so I've been around a long time. I haven't seen nothing like it." 1st year LB coach who was DC at Southern Miss, where his defenses led Conference USA in scoring defense each of his three seasons. 1st year LB coach who was the DB coach and recruiting coordinator at Ole Miss, in 2004. 1st year LB coach who held graduate assistant positions at UF and LSU. 1st year LB coach who was mentioned by Brian as a possible DC hire here after RR was hired. Yup. Total stretch he'd be "offered any job" at a school in his home state.

And it hurts to see him fail. But last year's "success" was a mirage all along, and it was clear before the lopsided Egg Bowl game that the team this year wasn't very good. I wish him well ... college football coaches are a little bit like politicians where you wonder if *any* of them can be good people, but it really seems like Croom is "good people". I wish him well.
