Maybe McFarlin is just pulling a Tony Almeida and will come back during the hours of 3:00-4:00PM tomorrow to amuse us with his wit and charm.

that has just never buzzed around my face. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but DON'T THINK I HAVE EVER TAKEN NOTICE OF McFARLIN, for better or worse. SO if he truly is trying to annoy people, he mustn't be doing as good of a job as others have in the past... I was just going to use this as a veiled opportunity to take shots at about 4 different people, but am pulling off... to each his own, etc.

There are a lot of people who purposely put up provocative posts. Sometimes, I think it is just to get attention. If you have a large number of responses to your post, it shows that someone notices you. I don't post much, largely because I neither know enough Michigan Sports minutiae, nor am I an expert in a particular sport. But on the rare occasion an op of mine received upwards of 50 responses, you bet I noticed. There are tons of similar situations in life. Think of the class clown. OR the clip of Sally Fields saying at some awards ceremony, "you like me . . . you really like me." Or, in my case, my 7 year old twins. Most of us like to be noticed, or affirmed. Unfortunately, we all can let our chain get pulled in some way. The successful troll manages to pull our chain enough that we respond. My general suggestion is to "just walk away." You have to have a combination of thick skin, not take it personally, and not waste your breath and your time on responding to a stupid or inflammatory post. I'm sure that Brian can attest to the need to ignore lots of the stupidity coming his way.

The problem is that for every 200 people that "just walk away", there are two that are compelled by the welling rage within them to respond to the troll. Then the troll responds to that, and now there are four people whose wills are no match for the sheer anger caused by the ignorance they are confronted with. This effect has a tendency to spread like wildfire (to stick with the metaphor), and the flame war begins.
