Sam Webb on Swenson Decommitment

Submitted by DCGrad on

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted yet. Sam said this morning that Swenson was told during the season that he needed to pick up his play. While Sam thinks (and I agree) that the timing could have been better, this wasn't a blindside type of decision. I wonder how much of this timing issue had to do with Partridge coaching linebackers and bowl prep/dead period stuff. I think Swenson will land on his feet somewhere in the B1G West. Whether or not he is successful, only time will tell.

He heard but hasn't yet confirmed that the kid never worked out for the current staff. They had repeatedly tried to set something up but he never made himself available for a workout.

regardless of what happened, good luck to him. If he's a legit 4 star he'll land somewhere.

Makes more sense. He comitted to Hoke and Harbaugh kept an eye on his performance and told him he will need to step up his game if he wants to play at Michigan. Then they also told him he should take all of his official visits.  It sounds like Swenson thought because he stayed loyal Harbaugh would honor the his comittment even if his performance on the field was poor. I can see the argument from both sides, but Harbaugh is all about performance.  They said he could come as a prefered walk-on because he obviously did not earn a full scholarship. In real life, companies or professional teams will not accept poor quality work and accept the decrease in productivity or success because of loyalty.

What does this have to do with loyalty?   One cannot committ two years in advance, and get to coast....

This reminds me of high school, when me and some close friends all wanted to go to Michigan.....   the two buddies, for their senior year, totally coasted, thinking they'd get in on work up until then... meanwhile I finished my final year stronger than before... and I got in... they were waitlisted, and then both didn't get in, because their senior year grades totally stunk..

Both were VERY bitter...

Both went to MSU... and have a hatred for us.

Do not be decieved...we reap what we sow... and he got what he deserved.

I'm glad to hear a confirmation of sorts that our staff is doing things the way that we want them to be done. However, this is a high school kid, so there are some people who may want to lighten up on him a bit. He might have been able to put forth a better effort, but he's not a monster, just a kid. Hopefully he finds a good fit for him and develops, and hopefully we find an OT that fits what Harbaugh and Drevno envision for their line, as it is a must have for us. Everyone wins. No need to bash the kid.

I am sure all sides of the story will be presented once Michigan is allowed to comment on recruits.

I am sure there will be plenty of questions from the freep at the press conference.

Wow, I don't feel bad at all now.

We need some non-coaches to get this story public to fight back against the negative recruiting and publicity other schools will use against us.

is he a legitimate 4-star LT or not? If he is/was, how could he be so bad now that the staff told him he would never see the field? I don't think this situation has nearly as much to do with football as some would believe.

who were so quick to bash Harbaugh and his staff's tactics will offer up an apology in light of this new information. I knew there was something more to this, and I was right. People were so quick to fire off downvotes and "how can our program sink to this level" hot takes yesterday. Bet ya they won't take their medicine today, they all should eat lemons.

It's the Internet. No apology is necessary or coming. I thought it was an overreaction even if we assumed the facts as they were initially presented. The posters were all up in arms. Yet, few if any, said that they didn't want Harbaugh leading the football program despite the perceived lack of integrity.

close to insinuating that any poster even remotely suggested that Harbaugh shouldn't lead the program. This has no place in your reply to my post, it has nothing to do with what I said. Also, while I'm here, I get that nobody is actually going to apologize. This was to be taken with a grain of salt (or do I need to explain what that means as well?) I was simply highlighting that none of the posters who bashed Harbaugh yesterday are going to come forward to take responsibility for grabbing their pitchfork....which is a buster move.

Michigan "pulling" his offer wasn't out of the blue at all.

A new coaching staff needs to evaluate you in person to ensure you are up to their standard. Afterall, they didn't extend the offer in the first place.

I don't see how this is an "unforseen circumstance" if they were constantly requesting to evaluate him in person.

Disinfect me! I just checked the Freep to see if they had a follow-up story.  Nawww.  I am sure that Snyder is going to do a revised article as soon as he figures out what a "countable hour" is.  Same old crap.

To be fair to the Freep, which I think is the right thing to do despite how hard it is, there's been no official statement from Michigan. I think you'll see a follow up if they ever release one, but I doubt that will happen.

I never suggested that the Freep pile on his character or his talents.  The clarification needs to be that, "sources report" that the Michigan staff had been in communication with him for awhile and had asked him to come to Michigan to camp or workout and he had said no.  "Sources further report" that Michigan's coaching staff had told him to visit other schools.

The Freep ran a one-sided story that portrayed him as a kid solidly with Michigan who had his visit cancelled and scholarship pulled on short notice.  The above refutes that portrayal.  If the original one-sided story is fair, so is this.  Remember, the family already put the PWO thing out there.

I am also having a hard time feeling too sorry for the kid at this point.  His father and coach went to some lenghts to portray this as Michigan pulling their offer at the last second.  Seems that isn't true.  If you play the media game and help create a false story about someone, you can expect them to respond.  When they do, it is not crapping on you.

Truth is always somewhere in the middle of the two sides.  Another reason to wait a few days or weeks before reacting or overreacting to any news.

Hope to hear the coaches response vs others . Sam's info was enlightening. Sounds like a typical Harbaugh challenge that was not acted upon by the recruit. If that is true, we are better off with another recruit that wants it more.

It is completely reasonable and above board to rescind a scholarship offer of there are changes in the ongoing evaluation of a prospective student athlete.

In this case, the evaluation is essentially over once a players senior football season is over, unless there are open items academically (likely not the case here, as Northwestern is now thought to have offered).

The difficult question to answer will be why they waited 2 months to rescind the scholarship offer.
