Possibility of Harbaugh's contract including a pay cut - investing money in new staff?

Has this ever happened before in the entire football ecoystem/is this even plausible?

I would be Ok with Harbaugh staying and getting his pay cut by $2 million a year if it meant that money is used to buy out Don Brown's contract, hiring a new DC/recruiting coordinator, and other bumps to new staff that are deemed necessary.

That being said, I hope Milton shows progression throughout the year - it would be nice to have a one Harbaugh coached QB land and stay in the NFL some point soon. It would also most likely mean the Team succeeded with that QB.

That should make the recruits flock to Michigan. "Hey guys, our head coach is so bad that we had to cut his salary by 25% and fire his assistants, but trust us with your development!"

An entire new staff besides JH isnt going to change anything, this is just what the program's going to be. Beat Sparty every other year, lose to OSU, and 3-5 loses

Brown has been a good dude, but it's time to get a change at DC.  Let's hire someone that can coach a defense comprehensively, not someone that created and is married to a defensive scheme that he had to develop because he was at BC.

Michigan State just showed the entire world how to beat Michigan.  Gonna be a long season for Germon and whoever they put out on the other side of him.

Brown is a problem but he’s not THE problem. The problem is Harbaugh has made a series of really bad hires on that side of the ball and now it’s costing him. If Harbaugh and his staff put as much energy and importance into recruiting as Ryan Day and OSU do this wouldn’t be an issue.

No thanks. I'd rather just fire his ass - or let his contract play out.

We've seen Harbaughs hiring credentials - and..... THEY AINT GOOD.

WHO'S GOT IT BETTER THAN US?! Get the fuck out of here with that bullshit.

SEE YA.

Since when has money been a limiting factor at Michigan? Money is irrelevant to everything except internet narratives saying $X per year is too much based on some ill-informed interpretation of value.

You may be charged $7 for a Starbucks coffee and say that’s overpriced. And a billionaire may just plop down a $100 bill and say keep the change. My point is, Michigan is the billionaire. So, evaluate the coffee against the quality of other coffee not against how much you think it’s worth.

If you say Jim doesn’t win enough against program expectations, fine. If he hasn’t assembled the right staff, also fine. But, we are unequivocally not in a situation where we would have championships if only Jim made less money and we could hire those all-star assistants.

Is everyone just oblivious to the context this year? The athletic Department has lost a huge amount of revenue. The university has lost a huge amount of revenue. Buying out Harbaugh's last year and paying a new coach big dollars is not on the table. My guess is the AD’s ideal plan would be a one year extension to buy time to see how the team does next year and also get a handle on what the near term future of Michigan athletics looks like.

If I were Warde, I would massively alter his contract to big incentives - win the game, the B1G East, the B1G, bowl game, make Playoffs, win a playoff, beat MSU, beat PSU, etc. and reduce his base

This scenario suggests that

1) Harbaugh is not part of the problem and

2) If he is part of the problem, let's keep him but only for a fraction of the cost. Our coordinators make $1.5mil and $1.1mil right now. How much more do they need?

I guess I'm asking does this solve the problem or just delay the inevitable as long it means we keep Jim.
