POLICY CHANGE: no n00b diaries

Submitted by Brian on
I asked about this a few days ago and the general response was "yes please" and after a few people signed up exclusively to post dumb stuff I've made the change: it takes 20 points to post a diary. Should cut down on register-to-whinge instances and cut down on new posters just throwing up diaries before learning the ropes.

I can just imagine hordes of red cedar trolls rushing over here only to discover that all they can do is comment on posts and then getting immediately neg-banged.

Thank you for establishing a point threshold for the diaries. At the very least this will help filter out the bad. But like others have said, I'm also for a 50+ point threshold for diaries and would like to see the 20pt requirement for posting back up as well. I'd hate to censor, but this blog has been about credibility and educated discussions and I think some people need to earn their stripes per se, before they can start bringing their opinions to the table.

but i could live with 50. the diaries should aim for potentially FPable content and cleaning out the riff raff should make the signal clearer.

I was just about to blow all of your minds with my grand unifying theory of Michigan Football diary. Now I guess you will have to wait for me to make a few more trivial comments to random posts. Seriously though, even though I probably won't be posting a diary, I think this is a good rule. I always thought diaries should be higher quality and not entrusted to the inexperienced.

You appoint a Diary Czar or two and they moderate them. If you look at sites theat give post counts of their members, some, if not most, of the absolute worst posters (such as on Scout) are the so called "board vets" Now here, the opposite seems to happen with diaries--newbs post diaries that are crap most of the time--but the roblem is people just love love love to be thread and/or diary cannons. It's getting to the point on MgBoard that guys start new threads with almost every stupid thought they ever have during the day.

Dude, I read that as "Dairy Czar" and thought, "Why the hell would we want a Dairy Czar on a Michigan fan site? A Sparty site, I could understand."

more. Whatever you guys or Brian decides is fine with me. I just usually read the comments anyway. I don't usually post unless it's a topic that interest me.

Thank you for changing the diary minimum to 20 MGo pts. You might consider a '50 point minimum' if the problem of people posting GoBoard thread topics in the diary section persists. It appears that people don't take the time to sort out what each section is designed for at times. I don't think point minimums completely solves the problem, however, I do think it's a start. KoB has an interesting point regarding the 'diary cannon' posters. Had to laugh at that one. Still, the moderator concept is a good one to consider down the line down the root out pesky trolls and poor quality 'diary drivel'. The final part may be the base readership of this fine blog keeping an active eye out for quality work and supporting it while discouraging poor quality work. Readership quality control has been active here before and seems to be challenged some by the growth and popularity of the site over time. Adjusting to the larger following and greater flow of word traffic at Mgoblog may be akin to teaching Calculus to the Masses but anything is possible. Most people seem to want intelligent discourse about M football and CFB in general.

I like the change. I still think 50 or so would be a nice cut-off. One of my first posts was a diary entry, but I would have been content to just comment on other threads and then post once I had the requisite posts. This site is one of the best on the Internet for college sports specifically because the community consistently delivers quality posts.

... 50 or even 100 point are entirely justified IMHO. In addition to stopping the race-to-diarize, it might give some people pause to see what is appropriate for the format; when in doubt, post something on the board. Or not. And when you feel the need to start a board posting with "OT," please reconsider, especially if it's something you just grabbed from the ESPN site. Some of the most cringe-worthy diaries are so bad as to be almost entertaining. But I think we don't need to see any more "This is my first diary and it might not be any good..." entries. Some misspellings are understandable, but a verb or two helps. As does a period every 10-15 words. What makes mgoblog special is not just the connection we share to UM. It is that most of the members can think straight and write OK. And if you've ever spent any time on other sports-related forums you know how rare that is.
