OT - What are you giving up/doing for Lent?

Submitted by MH20 on
For those who participate, what are you giving up (or doing that you normally wouldn't) for the Lenten season? I myself am giving up any kind of pop, most sugar drinks (fruit juice not included -- I love apple juice), and candy/sweets. I will also be starting P90X, though of course that will go longer than the 40 days of Lent. My goal is to continue to stay away from these things (or at least limit their intake) while finishing the workout program, post-Lent.

Hahaha. I'll make that adjustment next time it comes up. Eating is definitely hard especially gaining mass without too much fat. It seems like all you do is eat all day long. Plus the biggest problem people have besides diet is over training. Why would you do extra work in the gym if it was detrimental? That's a tricky beast sometimes.

Yea I was a little curious why I got negged for a fairly innocent post. I did end it with something along the lines of "I refuse to give up booze, what the hell else is there to do on the weekends?". If that is neg-worthy, so be it. But I will stick behind that statement for probably the next 40 years of my life.

relating pagan holidays (spring feast: fertility, bunnies, eggs, birth, conception, survival - things that humans have celebrated for hundreds of thousands of years) to Christian ones that have nothing to do with each other. When you look at it, each of the holidays we celebrate has more roots in the old meanings than those of Christianity. When the Church was deciding when to place their holidays, they put them on the same days that our race already celebrated. Haloween is the only one untouched by the fish/goti/people/stuff. OK, here comes the loss of my mgopoints.

There is a conspiracy theory movie called Zeitgeist that you can find in Google Video. The first part is all about linking Pagan mythology to Christian tradition. I think a lot of the connections that they make are a stretch, but it is very interesting to watch.

That movie is completely bunk and made me ROFL so many times. It was like "The Egyptians believe that the SUN was God...Christians believe Jesus was the SON of God!! Christianity is fake ROFLMAOZEDONG". Not even making that up, it's literally in the movie. Really funny.

It only makes sense to merge your new 'holiday' idea with an already accepted holiday time. E.G. - Commercial Christmas merges with/eats Christian Christmas. E.G.2 - Valentine's Day co-opting the misery most people already feel in mid-February. Now the lonely folks can really wallow in it. Incidentally, I've heard that before declaring independence, our forefathers took a poll to discern the part of the year during which people felt "most free". They planned to unleash one of the most awesome parchment-type proclamations of all time, and wanted to make sure people were in the mood. I think we all know how that poll turned out.

I'm going to give up auto-negging anyone who uses the terms... 1. 'Nuff Said 2. FAIL 3. HOWEVA 4. Anyone who thinks it's funny to copy Brian's..."Chart?...Chart!" type of saying. But I haven't kept a lenten promise since I was probably 6, so I'm sure this will only last until Friday.

I'm giving up Science and reverting back to God. I'm going to play the lottery everyday and if I win, I will become a priest. Wish me luck.

I'm not Catholic either (protestant), but I usually give something up for Lent. Last year I gave up booze, and I'm doing the same thing this year. The first week sucks, then not so bad. But on Easter afternoon I poured myself a tall Jameson's on the rocks, and I plan on doing the same this April 4th as well (not that I'm counting already or anything).

I'm not Catholic, so my family has never really observed Lent in any real capacity, but they have given up things for the 40 days every other year or so. I won't be giving anything up but I commend those who choose to. Good Luck.
