Okayyy...dude was damn near fouling the in-bounder. Also, he came frm out of bounds from jumping around doing said defending/fouling...and he was first to possess the ball. Why is that legal?!

Well, there's no rule against being the first to touch the ball or possess the ball.

And, actually, the defender being over the plane is not a foul until there is contact made (then it's a technical).  Was there contact.... Maybe/probably.  It was tough to see from the angle if he was over the plane or not.  Unfortunately, there was no room on that sideline (scorer's table).

Actually, Section 6 Article 9b of the NCAA Mens Bball rule book says

"No opponent of the thrower-in shall have any part of his person over the inside plane of the boundary line."

You do not need to make contact, you only need to reach over the line.  At minimum the official should have moved the defender back, even if the play had started, to give the thrower-in space.  With the scoring table/ad board so close to the court the ref needs to give the thrower-in proper space.

Late to the party, but that was a hell of a game! I could easily see one or both of those teams in the Final Four. Buddy Heil will win the Wooden Award! 3OT No. 1 vs. No. 2 high talent college basketball doesn't get much better.
