OT: Mike Legg Eat your heart out!

Submitted by Fhshockey112002 on

This goal was from today May 13. During the Russia Finland Semi-Final game.  Mikael Granlund scores an amazing goal.  Granlund is 19 for what it's worth.

Edit: VS English video now linked.

Also wasn't knocking Legg's goal, but Granlund is on the move vs Legg being stationary, and playing against professionals (even if Minnesota was the best NCAA team in decades they are not pros).

I wish somebody on the Wings could do it. Datsyuk barely missed on a wrap around that he would have had by a country mile if he had done that. I'm sure he could do it if he wanted to, but he just doesn't. =(

Just sayin: Michigan was down 2-1 to a really good Minnesota team in the Western Regional when Legg pulled that. It wasn't just an awesome goal, but a hugely timely one. M won 4-3.

Mike Legg was all of 20, when he did it.  Almost 21, to be sure, but it's not like Legg was Lidstrom's age when he did it.

And, it's not like Mike Legg is the only person to do it, or even the first, I don't remember who was the first, probably nobody too important and it wasn't a critical goal, in an ESPN televised venue and so nobody really cares, but I do know that Crosby got a ton of pub for doing it in juniors in Canada as well and several others have done it have been mentioned as doing it.  But they weren't in the tournament on the way to a National Championship, against a very good Minnesota team that happened to be precisely one goal ahead at the time.

Uh, you do realize Granlund is 19, right?

Also, ever since Legg did the move and got all over ESPN and highlight videos, every kid does this. I helped coach a Michigan high school team before I moved to Pittsburgh, and half the kids on that team would spend 10 minutes picking up the puck like that and throwing it in. Very few people have the balls to pull it off in a game, and most defensemen will lay you on your ass if they see you trying it.

In my opinion, Legg's was the more difficult move. Yes, Granlund was on the move, but he picked the puck up in a much easier way than Legg did. I can pick the puck up like Granlund did (although I don't think I can whip it around the net and top shelf like he did) but not like Legg.

By the way, the player before Legg to do it was Bill Armstrong, who taught Legg how to do it. Armstrong scored a lot of goals that way, but only got it on video the day before Legg's goal, but ESPN wouldn't show it. Legg made it famous, but he gives all the credit to Armstrong.
