OT: Inside the mind of an NFL kicker

Good story tonight on 60 Minutes about NFL kickers.  Kickers score one-third of the points in the NFL, but get little respect.  One-half of the teams have replaced their kickers during the season at least once.

The following is a link to the video and transcript of the story.  The video is 13:23 minutes long and very enlightening.  For example, did you know that there is a special ball called a K ball that is only used for kicking in games?

I did know they had a different ball. I found interesting that one guy was saying the shoe on his kicking foot was 1.5 sizes smaller than his regular size, and the front two cleats were filed down, so as not to get caught in the turf.

Inside the mind of former Lions kicker Garo 'I keek a touchdown!' Yepremian, as he described his infamous/ill-fated Super Bowl pass:

"Many big people were chasing me. I didn’t know what to do. So I thought I would surprise them and throw it.” — Garo Yepremian, Miami placekicker, after a disastrous attempt to throw a pass in the Super Bowl.

Kickers are like MLB closers they handle the pressure by either being robots ala Jason Hanson/Mariano Rivera or being mentally unstable ala Bironas/John Rocker.

Ali-Haji Sheik tried to steal my date at a party once.  She told him she was not interested. He said "But I'm the kicker on the football team".  She told him she was a psych major and certainly didn't need to go out with any "head cases". She smiled at me, took my hand, and away we walked. End of story.
