OT: How stupid are the lions?

Submitted by SFBayAreaBlue on
Let's see, they're going to pay a guy 20 million to sit on the bench for two years before he's useful, if he's ever useful. They took a tight end, in a league where TE's average 2 or three catches at most per game if their name's not tony gonzales. And now they just took a safety who can't cover and can't tackle. it would be funny if it weren't so sad. did you see the tape of this safety they just took? HE NEVER WRAPS UP! he's got terrible body control, he can't stay with a WR in one-on-one. WTF?

Upon further investigation, Pettigrew graded as a better run blocker than Michael Oher. He's also a top notch pass blocker; he apparently single-handedly shut down Orakpo when OK St played Texas. I think if you take a guy who is primarily a pass catcher, we screwed up because you can argue that TE is a luxury pick. On the other hand, if you take a guy who will really help the running game and can help out in pass-blocking until we get a real O-Line, that is a much more forgivable sin.

I just kept thinking "Jordan Dizon" when they reached for Delmas. I hope he turns into the next Ed Reed, but I have a feeling that there's more of a chance of Maualuga being Dan Connor

Like someone said above, the Lions got the top-rated QB, top-rated TE, and top-rated S. Obviously the top-rated guy doesn't always turn out to be the best guy, but at least they're getting talent and not reaching for lower-rated guys (the Darrius Heyward-Bey pick boggled my mind).

This is probably just useless bitching since it's the penultimate pick and Mr. Irrelevant-minus-one never makes a roster anyway, but if they're so excited about Brandon Pettigrew that they ignore the giant holes in the defense and on the O-line to take him, why would they grab yet another tight end at any point in the draft? All second-to-last picks have basically the same chance of making a roster, which is practically nil, but on the off-chance you get a useful player there, wouldn't it be much better if that player were a linebacker or a lineman or any kind of a defensive player at all, rather than a threat to make your first-round pick useless? Frankly that is the Lions dumbest move of the whole draft. Pettigrew can actually be rationalized, even if I hate the idea of passing on the myriad of quality defensive players.
