OT: Anyone know what happened to Copey on WTKA?

Submitted by M-Wolverine on

I've heard Mark Copeland is gone from the Station (though I don't think the parent company...pretty sure he's still on 107.1), but as is usual with all the mysterious radio departures, I've never heard why. (Could be completely innocent...more hours/$$ at other station).  And was wondering if anyone who's more in tune is in the know, like Don or someone.

I mean, I'm not lighting a candle; it's not a groundbreaking loss...his argument logic was always a little..askew...but he would at least stand up and point out things in the afternoon if the various hosts got too ridiculous. And I'm not thinking the new guy has the cache' to do so....or the will...or interest...or whatever.

Just wondering if anybody had heard the inside story (I always hear this stuff like a year after it happens).

Sorry to say that I have stopped listening to WTKA in the afternoons because of Jeff DeFran. For a station that is supposed to be the voice of Michigan athletics, he has taken every opportunity he can to stab Rich Rod in the heart. I may or may not support the current coach, but I damn well support the team. His comments seek to harm the coach and through him, the team and recruiting. Copey was/is at least fair in his assessment of things.

Unfortunately DeFran's public badgering of Coach Rod, whether genuine or not, is part of his job. Phone calls drive listenership in sports radio is critical to the advertising dollar. I am sure youre on board with how this business model works from DeFran to Valenti. So I agree with your right to changing the channel but if our athletic department heeds JD's advice on who should and shouldn't be coaching at UofM, then we are all in major trouble.

And i will go as far to be the first to initiate a slow clap for a standing ovation. It is in my opinion that banning Jeff DeFran is bringing more attention to the negativity than the negative delusional thoughts he pipes over the airwaves. Michigan athletic enthusiasts, like yourself, are intelligent, passionate fans who can read between the lines when a show host is ranting for ratings. If the Sports Radio Zombie buys in to the last thing JD says then that is his/her problem. So when RR is going to Rose Bowls and NC games, which I have faith he will, those zombies will be speaking the same language as you.

The way I look at it is the only way that I can make a difference is to vote with my feet. Although I may only be one person, I will make a difference and I will impact others to do the same thing. I won't listen to TKA during any DeFran time slot. I will not buy a Free Press and I will not open anything that links to one of their articles thereby giving them a "hit".

If more people did this it would eventually make a difference and things would change. I may be a bit idealistic, but that's just me.

I think he mentioned on the air that his responsibilities on 107.1 were ramping up so he was not going to be a regular on WTKA. He has called in a few times since.

WTKA needs to end this afternoon round robin and just bring back Fithian.  Their afternoon show has been unlistenable for years (Except for when Brian was on, on Mondays), even more so now that Defran runs around spreading rumor as fact, then backtracks awfully quick and applies an amazing amount of ass-kissing when an Athletic department representative calls him to tell him he's dead wrong.

"Bruce I still get to keep my press credentials right?  LOLOLOLOLOL"   Go drink a knife Defran.

/Rant off.

Fithian is no better these days. He's under the impression that RR ran boren and Mallet out of town and that he is a bad coach. I was listening one night last week and he and Caputo shouted down some caller who tried to tell them they were wrong about Mallet.

You can't tell me that doesn't enter into the equation when discussing why DeFran is still drawing a paycheck from the station.

I stay off that WTKA. I can't take how bad the afternoon show is. It's not even the stuff they say, it just seems really cheap and thrown together. I hope they don't pay those people. It's that bad.

Copey burst into flames from having to spend too much time with DeFran.

Tragic.

How long will the FCC let this DeFran menace continue? He must be stopped.

the Detroit media.  I listen to WTKA to get the Michigan perspective.  I turn the radio off when De-Tool is broadcasting.  Go Blue !!!

Hey, Copey here.....didn't want any rumors to start, but the reason I am no longer on WTKA...well, it's all Rich Rod's fault.......

No, no just kidding.    It was an issue of trying to do too many things at the same time and not being able to do any of them well.   I have been on 107one pretty much since it started and I do the midday shift there (10a - 3p), I am also the music director, do commercial production for all the stations (everyone on the staff does that), and do the recorded promos and other imaging elements (the stuff between the songs) on 107one.    I also have two music programs on Sunday nights for 107one (Under The Radar Radio and Sonic Bliss).   I do a lot of work at home (faster computer) and it was getting to the point where I had to constantly rush to get things done, which meant more mistakes.    So that is the reason.   No personality conflicts.   I got along great with Raddy (even though we would argue on the air).  I don't always agree with DeFran, but don't have any issues with him personally.   I hope to still contribute to the station in a lesser role  (if they want me to), and that would include subbing on The Big Show when someone is on a vacation......because I really do love talking sports.

Let me rant now.....

I am a fan of both Lloyd Carr and Rich Rodriguez - both!   I think Rich Rod is a great coach and I want him to do well because once he breaks through he can build something very successful here on a long term basis.  But I also think he has to win 8 games by the time this season is over.  U Conn is the most important game of the year.   Can't go into South Bend in a hole.      The issues regarding the team's violations are a black eye for Michigan, but there was many culprits, not just the current coach.  They pale in comparison to some of the other things going on in college football.  The NCAA was at one time well-intended, but is addicted to its own power and is obsolete.      I can't wait for September 4th!  Well, I love summer - so I can wait, actually.

Glad Red Berensen is sticking around and December 11th at the Big House is gonna be a blast.

Dave Brandon is doing some really good things - a few traditions may be changed, but those traditions started somewhere too.  I love the night game at the Big House next year.   The same people that can't accept change would have complained when the car or television were invented.

The Tigers shouldn't be buyers or sellers.   If they can get a back of the rotation, capable inning-eater for a small price, great.   They are good enough to contend as they are and have an extremely bright future.  This team could be incredibly good by 2012, 2013.   It would be foolish to mortgage the future right now.   Yes they need to improve that rotation, but so does every other team.    They won't win the division, but they wont be eliminated until the last week of the season.

Mike Valenti is a jackass for his recent tirades about how bad the Tigers are, but what's new.  All he does is take what he thinks the local listeners like and just champions the opposite.  It's not genuine, it's a schtick and it's painfully obvioius and makes for bad radio.    Hey, the Tigers are not great, they are slightly above-average, but the way that assclown talks you would think they were the Bad News Bears before they got Kelly Leak.    Hey Mike, Verlander is an ace, and the 1-6 of the lineup is solid.  Get over yourself.

The Lions will be worth watching this year.  They still won't be very good, but they will be competitive and that defensive line could be fun to watch.  I can see them possibly finishing 3rd in the division - the Bears are overrated and Jay Cutler is a moron.   I say an optimistic 6-10 this year.

If the Pistons leave town I will probably be sad for a while, but I barely watched any NBA the last 3 years anyway.   Even if Joe did draft well, as soon as the players become stars they will always bolt to a warmer or more glamorous destination.....the NBA is not about team anymore.

Dennard Robinson is potentially the most exciting player in all of college football.  If he develops as a passer - look out.
