OT: Angriest cities in America

Submitted by Purkinje on

I just heard about this article on the news, so I thought I'd go read it in its entirety. Apparently Detroit is the 100th angriest city in America, and is the only Michigan city on the list. All four significant cities in Ohio (Cleveland, Toledo, Cincinnati, and The Sulfur Pits) made the list. Surprising? I think not.

In other news, 7 Action News misreported the story as "Men's Health says Detroit is the angriest city in America!" I sent them a message about how 100th angriest doesn't equal 1st angriest. We'll see if they fix the embarassing misreporting.

In other other news, their numbering system may be stupid, and Detroit actually is ranked number 1. Whatever.

While Ohioans no doubt seem to have a disproportionately-sized chip on their shoulders (here's a tip: stop making your sports teams such a huge part of your self-esteem when most of your teams suck), I really don't get the "-est cities in America" lists. There's no good way to quantify this stuff.

Well, depending on what "-est" you're looking at, there are ways to quantify it, even if they aren't perfect. Violent crimes per capita is probably a fair approximation of the level of violence in a city/region/state. Probably the same for a lot health-related rankings, as well as economic rankings.

But yeah, I don't know how you adequately operationalize and quantify "angriest."

EDIT: After reading the link above, yeah their operationalization of "angry" seems pretty bull shitty.

The article itself says:

"Well, Detroit, go ahead and let us have it: You are officially the most spitting-mad metropolis."

Methinks they have a poor numbering system and really did mean that 100th angriest = 1st angriest.  Plus, there's no way Burlington, VT is the angriest city.  You can't be angry in Vermont!

Yeah... as somebody who lives in Burlington, I'm pretty sure we score as "not very angry" in all of those categories.  Rush hour for us means you have to wait through an extra light on your way home sometimes, and the two-lane interstate gets sort of busy-ish.

7 Action News is right.  You are wrong.

I don't know why Men's Health listed the cities starting at 100 and going down, but the lead in says:

Well, Detroit, go ahead and let us have it: You are officially the most spitting-mad metropolis.

Further evidence that high number = more angry can be found simply by looking at the cities listed.  Do these look like the angriest citis in America?

7 Cheyenne, WY
6 Salt Lake City, UT
5 Madison, WI
4 Colorado Springs, CO
3 Fargo, ND
2 Lincoln, NE
1 Burlington, VT

Actually when you go with the fact that 0-16 is an actual possible baseline, one could argue that 0 wins means people go "lol" and then anything from there on up in a surprise.  I don't know about you, but this year felt relatively good in comparison!  Woo mediocrity!

In 2007, the mayor here ordered the police to slash the tents of a bunch of homeless people.  Many of the tents were new and had just been donated.  That still damages St Pete's image to this day.

The people here don't really seem all that angry, though: it's just that the ones who are angry seem to get all the publicity.  It's tough to be angry all the time when you can just say "FTS, I'm going to the beach" and be there in less than fifteen minutes.  I've lived in quite a few places, and I can't really agree with St Pete as the third-angriest city.

To be fair, Men's Health has a penchant for recycling stats from polls and extrapolating so that "the least healthy" city also winds up being "the angriest", "the worst to drive in", etc.  Detroit certainly isn't the friendliest town in the world, but as someone who rides the subway every day in New York City, this city isn't that happy either.  Kind of a meaningless survey concocted by a magazine trying to sell copy.

I'm from Mass and have lived all around the Boston area. I live in South Boston now and Southie natives are some of the most miserable people you'll ever meet.

They said Detroit made the list of most miserable cities too, along  with Flint and Grand Rapids.....

Note to WXYZ: When I wake up and sit down with my coffee, I am perturbed enough that I must actually work for this paycheck thing sometimes. Don't make me miserable worrying about which Michigan cities are on this "Most Miserable" list.
