NIL and Player Transfer Question

Submitted by UM Indy on June 15th, 2022 at 10:06 AM

Just curious how this works.  Was on the M Den website and noticed the Alex Storako jersey tee.  Was $40, now $20.  But my question is this.  Does that money follow her now that she is transferring to Oklahoma?  Say I buy the shirt today.  What happens to that money?  The M Den keeps it all because she no longer attends Michigan?  She still gets a cut because it's her name regardless of where she goes to school?  Lots of interesting questions that I'm not sure have been sorted out yet.

Yeah, I thought the whole point was to let them cash in on their name, image and likeness.  The ability to receive such benefits is not supposed to be tied to any given school, even though that is the primary thing many schools are trying to do with NIL.

She still is entitled to her cut because the sale is presumably driven by the use of her name.

it was largely in jest..... i doubt there is any demand for Clark's jersey in Pitt and he actually played a game there.

on the other hand.... Ron Popeil didn't become a millionaire by selling the Chop-o-matic, but he did by selling it and 25 other creations via infomercials.....

Whatever her contract says they'll fulfill, so my guess is she'll get a cut of the (reduced) rate if anyone buys it.  I also assume there's language in there about acceptable reductions in price in the event, say, she's no longer at UM.

I am probably one of the least-knowledgeable on the board as far as NIL goes. But one thing I gathered from an article on some SEC schools is that NIL cannot be contingent upon enrollment at a specific school. A booster can't say to a kid "I'll give you $1 million to play at my alma mater." Apparently that was one of the shady areas with the Texas A&M class.

So if someone transfers, any NIL deal they had in place still exists. The amount M Den has to pay is still based on the individual contract.

If someone on here knows more about how NIL works, it could make for a great diary post.

From what I've heard, Michigan has the boosters to make those commitments across sports, but the Athletic Department is not allowing it right now and we are trying to play by the "rules" as an institution.

My understanding is that boosters other schools are indeed making those explicit offers, and it is winning them recruits over our "trust us, we have NIL" approach.

That said, I've also been told that NIL can create team chemistry problems, even (or especially?) in the non-rev sports - so something worth considering and apparently part of the Athletic Dept's stance on the issue.

because too many pearl clutchers are concerned with how MSU is paying players (it's legal so who cares) and what recruiting rankings are 10 months before signing day (Bama is ranked lower than Michigan at 40- something but sure, lets whine and freak out that Sparty is ahead of us in July over a year before any of those kids leave high school.)

Also, this isn't RCMB and for the most part, we don't care what MSU is doing

The smart NIL thing to do would be a location based deal.

"Every fall sunday for 30 minutes we want you to stop by for autographs and to pick up your check in our  Ann arbor location."

Make that part of the plan and it works itself out. You only old them to it if you feel you need to as part of the contract.
