New goal horn coming to Yost
In the past you have heard maybe one or two different goals horns at Yost, all which have just been played over the speakers and not an actual horn but that is about to change. A few years back I bought a pair of horns that I thought looked like the horns the Red Wings used at the Joe and sure enough they were the same type of horn. I don’t have really a use for them and figured what better way to put them to good use than having them as Michigans new goal horn. I contacted the staff at Yost and they are interested in acquiring them. I will be delivering them sometime this week. It will be a familiar sound for many Michigan/Red Wings fans.

The Wings usually had 2 or 3 of these horns at the Joe pointed in different directions, one set of these horns should be plenty loud for Yost. As many of you know LCA no longer has that horn and plays a recording. It will be nice to have that good old sound back in real life.

Yes, it will only be one horn so may sound a little different but pretty similar.

I really really hate the recording they use now...I know they couldnt bring the ones from the Joe due to not meeting new fire codes, but they cant find any combo of horn that sounds similar to the Joe?

If I understand correctly they used medical oxygen for the horns, it makes sense since you could fill up a tank and it would last you a few months perhaps. But they can run on compressed air just fine and I don’t understand why an air compressor would violate a fire code which to me makes no sense. The old horn just hit different and just was kinda the sound of Detroit. The recording really isn’t even a recording either it’s just computer generated, any red wings goal horn on YouTube would sound better.

Honestly it almost sounds like a excuse, and they also said there not loud enough, that’s BS to because you can always give ‘em a higher psi and make them louder. I could tell that the Joe horn was louder for certain games during the regular season and especially louder for playoff games.

A goal horn at Yost has always come off to me as Michigan trying too hard.
I'm officially Old Guy, but I preferred the roar of the crowd, followed very shortly by The Victors.

I would say if the they do one 5 second blast after a goal and still be able to hear the victors that would be our perfect compromise, but I do understand this point of view and kinda thought the same way unless it was an actually good sounding horn.

This. There was no reason to add a goal horn at Yost, then or now.
The Athletic Department has tried so hard to reinvent the wheel at Yost for about 15 years now, and you gotta wonder, why?

I may sound like an old fart but we don't need a goal horn. The light goes on, the band plays the Victors and we know what to do.
Just like we don't need a DJ or the basketball PA guy to tell us how to say "Go Blue".
When you're better than everyone else there is no need to become just like them.

Having legacy horns from the Joe is great! Besides, there's a good few seconds or so before the band kicks in and we sing. I have no doubt that John Pasquale and the band can work around a horn to keep the energy going.

Personally, I liked the days of no goal horn at Yost, just a loud roar followed by the band BUT...
If we must have a goal horn and you just enabled Michigan to have the Red Wings old horn (the real one) that I think everyone misses very much... I'll allow it and you are a hero.
