I fnished JUB's Endzone the other day and am hungry for more U-M football reading. I downloaded his son Kelly Lytle's biography of his dad and am about to dive into that. It's called "To Dad, From Kelly".

I remember Rob well from my early days as a fan. We used to sit in Section 17 about 2/3 of the way up. There was a row of guys in front of us  who yelled "Heeeeyyyyyy, LYTLE!!!!" every time he touched the ball. We were fortunate to hear this a lot!

classic first picture, but I didn't recognize the 2nd one until I found this:

Rob Lytle

...which should be familiar to the gamers among us.   What a cover!

But since I found another of my favorite Lytle photos, here's Lytle wearing the home Maize-and-Blue, along with that famous battle-scarred helmet of his:

Late College Football Hall of Famer Lytle to be honored at Michigan

Last but not least, thanks to Les Miles for paying tribute to one of his greatest teammates, one of the Greatest of The Wolverines, Rob Lytle.

Just a quick thought---in this day-and-age, wouldn't Lytle be accurately referred to as 'RMFL' ?

I knew Rob in college, though had not been in touch with him since then. Very unassuming, very nice guy. Helluva football player.

I was sad to learn of his early passing and the health issues he had to deal with in his later years.

Thanks for letting people down that way know about Lytle Les. Since being a Lions fan never paid off I rooted for the Broncos back when Rob was with them. My biggest regret those days was Lytle never getting that Super Bowl ring.

I went over to the stadium to watch.  Turned out my high school coach was sitting just a few rows down from me, so I went to say hi.  We were talking and he asked me who some of the standouts for the team were likely to be in the fall (he was an ND grad--I think he was scouting...).  Just as he finished his question, Lytle broke a long run down the sideline.  "That guy", I said, and pointed.  "Rob Lytle."

Good previous comments, just going off memory. But I do remember Rob moving to fullback in 74 or 75 seems like Harlan Huckleby? Took over at TB, but Lytle ran against Iowa for 170 yds on 10 carries, tough n fast. He would have been RMFL now day.

I forgot his helmut that always looked like it was tested in a cement mixer, and Lytle got those yards against Iowa as a maybe 170# fb with Huckelby as primary ball carrier that year. Lytle was just a bad ass. Not suprised Bo loved him, Toby Gerhart againbst notre dame closest I seen

Some idiots discredit Miles and do not appreciate his true love for Michigan.  It is a true love from his heart that is far deeper than LSU.  He would have crawled to Michigan to take the job 7 years ago if it were properly presented.  Imagine how the last 7 years would have been great

Lyle was one of the greatest to ever wear the Maize and Blue. I remember the 'Goooo, LYTLE!' cheers as well. I thought it was against Wisconsin where Bo put him back at tailback for a play, after being moved to fullback, as if to 'throw him a bone', and he broke it for an 80 yard TD. Once Lytle broke free, you weren't going to catch him.

We Michigan fans were so spoiled in those years. Those 70's teams were the greatest, especially those Leach and Lytle years.

I was a frightened  freshperson (term used by UM in those days) from Ohio in the fall of 1976.  I had no idea who Rob Lytle was when I arrived.  Seeing that guy from Ohio leading that unbelievable team ( Rick Leach was on the cover of SI and that cover was on every door in the dorm!)  made me feel like it was going to not just be ok but great!
