Ah, I got too long-winded and detailed with my post. So I'll just add it here as a long-winded and detailed comment:

Yesterday afternoon the Women's team made the NCAA finals (see UNCWolverine's post from yesterday, now off the front page), with scores the best in program history. Finals today at 3:30 pm on ABC. And last night the men followed suit in their qualifier. [Stories and video highlights for both preliminaries linked on MGoBlue.com's main page.]  Men's finals at 8:00 pm on BTN.

The Men were ranked #2 nationally, with senior Cameron Bock and sophomore Paul Juda having already made the U.S. National Team late last year. Both usually compete in the all-around, but decided not to last night, knowing they'd have another full competition today.  [The Team, The Team, The Team.]  [And The Conference, The Conference, The Conference: half of the men's finalists are from the Big Ten.]

A story not included on MGoBlue.com is that senior Jacob Moore, one of their top performers who'd missed much of last season with injury in addition to the Covid cancellations, was back competing.  After his arms seemed to crumple on his first two events, bringing low scores that might have been devastating, he surprisingly came back for floor exercise. Spectacularly. With the highest score in the meet.

We're a gymnastics school too!

Obviously football is a huge part of our fandom and there's something to be said for its century-long legacy but it's nice to remember that we are elite or better in almost every other college sport and there's plenty to reasons to cheer if you're a Michigan fan.

Well UM is guaranteed to finish in the top 12 next year as Minnesota (yes, with 22 B1G titles) and Iowa are dropping the sport.  According to today's Wash. Post (paywall if not using private on an iPhone) there are now going to be just 12 mens gymnastics teams left in the country with 5 of them in the B1G.

You can frankly add men's tennis, wrestling and perhaps even men's track and field (also being dropped by Minnesota) to the same graveyard of sports over the next few years.  Yes, the COVID deficits are an immediate factor, but even the richest of universities (e.g. Stanford) are shedding male sport teams to fit under Title IV requirements.  Collegiate men's gymnastics (and likely competitive US olympic men's teams as a result) are likely disappearing in the near term.

Stanford dropped a very good mens wrestling team not over $.......if not Title 9 than what do you believe is the reason?  Frankly, I am open to any conspiracy theory.  Just read that 99.4% of all those killed by police are men (even as women account for 40% of police-citizen interactions). Clearly, the out to destroy mankind conspiracy might have some legs.

My guess is they are also cancelling a women’s sport. Since if they had men’s wrestling last year and weren’t canceling a women’s sport they wouldn’t need to drop wrestling. So I can’t tell you why they are dropping sports, but the reason isn’t title 9.
