Michigan Baseball: Sweeping Northwestern

Submitted by Stimulus Progression on May 14th, 2023 at 5:41 PM

Michigan baseball is very close to sweeping Northwestern this weekend, up 14-5 in the 8th.

With the win, they will have won 4 in a row, and would be tied with Rutgers and Nebraska for 4th in the B1G (13-8). Pretty nice first season for Tracy Smith. Season ends next weekend in Columbus.

Ball out, boys!

Michigan has clinched a spot in the Big Ten Tournament (top 8 qualify) to be held in Omaha on May 23-28.  The worst Michigan can do in the regular season is 8th, the best they can do is technically 1st.

Every team (except Illinois) has 3 games left.

1t. Maryland (15-6)
1t. Indiana (15-6)
3. Iowa (13-7)
4t. Rutgers (13-8)
4t. Nebraska (13-8)
4t. Michigan (13-8)
7. Illinois (12-12)
8t. Michigan State (10-11)
8t. Purdue (10-11)
10. Minnesota (8-13)
11. Penn State (6-14)
12. Ohio State (6-15)
13. Northwestern (3-18)

This week's games:  Ind at MSU, RU at Minn, Iowa at NW, Mich at OSU, Md at PSU, Neb at PU.

That would be a 3-way tie for 6th.  Illinois is off this weekend, and Michigan (13-11 at the worst) will finish ahead of Illinois (12-12) even if Michigan gets swept.

So Michigan is guaranteed to finish ahead of Illinois, Minnesota, Penn State, Ohio State and Northwestern--even if Michigan loses the tiebreaker (and I think they do), they finish 8th.
