Men's Hockey thread: USA vs Germany

Submitted by crg on February 13th, 2022 at 8:58 AM

Surprised no thread yet, but tied 1-1 after 1st period.  Both teams had early PP goals, with UM alum Steve Kampfer scoring for USA.  Beniers & Brisson have been getting a good deal of mention by the announcers for their play as well.

Thanks, crg, for getting this thread up and running. Just about to do the same after failing to set my alarm.

2-1 USA, goal by Matt Knies (U Minn)

Edit: German challenge claiming goaltender interference.

Referees are from Russia & Belarus - so this will be fair, for sure.

Goal good!

Drew Commesso again giving USA stellar work between the pipes, the 1st period PP goal today the only score he's given up thru 4 3/4 periods he's played in these Olympics.

As this is the first time I've seen the German team play this week, they don't look like they play quite as much of a big physical style as the Canadian Olympic team.

Watching on NBC now - Beniers and Brisson getting a lot of shifts - I'm looking forward to getting the back for what is left of the season.  Mann is not in net today.

I suspect it hurts Canada more than USA because more of their better players will feed directly in the NHL and USA has more of the premier college talent to draw from.  It probably puts the others at a more competitive advantage although less so than in years past because of the number of European players now in the NHL.

It hurts both. While all other countries have a ton of talent not playing in the NHL, obviously the best of the best in North America, stay in North America.

That's why hot college prospects are the next best thing!

The idea is that Beniers, Brisson, Knows, etc will all be NHL contributors within the next season or 2 so it's almost just as good as a current NHLer.

It puts both USA and Canada at a physical disadvantage, as both teams would likely have been mostly NHL players, but several of the other teams would have had a sprinkling of NHL players too.

But I love the energy and enthusiasm that our youngsters bring, something a little more difficult to quantify.

Bottom line: we're getting a bye into the quarterfinals and are fully weaponized for a run at the Gold!

Fivethirtyeight article examining odds/rankings from before and after the NHL announcement that NHL players would not play. TL;DR is that Canada is the biggest loser, followed by the USA, and Russia the biggest winner as they draw nearly all their players from the KHL.

Another good job by goalie Drew Commesso, so good to have a pair of excellent goalies for Team USA!

Between Commesso and Michigan Alum Strauss Mann, we've held the opposition to 4 goals in 3 games.

It’s kind of amazing that Germany is still a country. You’d think murdering 10 million people would kinda disqualify you from the whole country thing.
