Men's Hockey thread: USA vs Germany
Surprised no thread yet, but tied 1-1 after 1st period. Both teams had early PP goals, with UM alum Steve Kampfer scoring for USA. Beniers & Brisson have been getting a good deal of mention by the announcers for their play as well.

Thanks, crg, for getting this thread up and running. Just about to do the same after failing to set my alarm.
GOOOAALLL USA!!!!
Golden Gopher Matt Knies with the goal, but it's being reviewed...
February 13th, 2022 at 9:10 AM ^
2-1 USA, goal by Matt Knies (U Minn)
Edit: German challenge claiming goaltender interference.
Referees are from Russia & Belarus - so this will be fair, for sure.
Goal good!

USA goes on a 2 minute PP as the Deutschlanders get a minor for the unsuccessful challenge.

PK success!!!
Halfway through the game, still 2-1 USA
February 13th, 2022 at 9:29 AM ^
Drew Commesso again giving USA stellar work between the pipes, the 1st period PP goal today the only score he's given up thru 4 3/4 periods he's played in these Olympics.
February 13th, 2022 at 9:34 AM ^
As this is the first time I've seen the German team play this week, they don't look like they play quite as much of a big physical style as the Canadian Olympic team.
February 13th, 2022 at 9:36 AM ^
They've been competitive with both Canada & USA. Not better, but certainly a challenge.
February 13th, 2022 at 9:40 AM ^
They do look pretty good, very likely a medal contender. Good skaters, their overall style of play somewhat similar to that of Team USA.

German PP, tripping on Noah Cates (NPCB)
February 13th, 2022 at 9:36 AM ^
Another successful USA PK!
February 13th, 2022 at 9:40 AM ^
End of 2nd period. 2-1 USA
USA will begin 3rd period with full 2min PP advantage.
February 13th, 2022 at 9:41 AM ^
End of the 2nd, we still hold a 2-1 lead.
Go ?????? USA!
February 13th, 2022 at 9:59 AM ^
GOAL ?????? USA!!!
Nathan Smith (Minnesota State) makes it 3-1 on an unassisted goal.
February 13th, 2022 at 10:05 AM ^
Smith was Johnny-on-the-spot. great loose puck goal!
February 13th, 2022 at 10:02 AM ^
Germans trying to be more physical than USA. Hasn't paid off for them.
February 13th, 2022 at 10:08 AM ^
10 minutes remain in regulation
February 13th, 2022 at 10:11 AM ^
Would love to see us get that 4th goal and salt this game away!
February 13th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
Watching on NBC now - Beniers and Brisson getting a lot of shifts - I'm looking forward to getting the back for what is left of the season. Mann is not in net today.
February 13th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
Great defense by USA as we protect our 3-1 lead, 5 minutes to go
February 13th, 2022 at 10:20 AM ^
3-2 as the Germans score with 2:29 left
February 13th, 2022 at 10:20 AM ^
Fuck, saw that coming. USA really on their heals the past minute or so.
February 13th, 2022 at 10:21 AM ^
Is the lack of NHL players good or bad for the US?
February 13th, 2022 at 10:28 AM ^
I suspect it hurts Canada more than USA because more of their better players will feed directly in the NHL and USA has more of the premier college talent to draw from. It probably puts the others at a more competitive advantage although less so than in years past because of the number of European players now in the NHL.
February 13th, 2022 at 11:07 AM ^
Canada has just ONE player in the top 12 for goals scored in the NHL this season. USA has 6 players in the top 12.
February 13th, 2022 at 12:26 PM ^
Edit: Bad stat lookup on my part
February 13th, 2022 at 1:23 PM ^
Most college talent, I believe (I haven’t looked at the stat in a while), is still Canadian.
February 13th, 2022 at 8:08 PM ^
That is 100% not accurate.
February 13th, 2022 at 8:10 PM ^
It hurts both. While all other countries have a ton of talent not playing in the NHL, obviously the best of the best in North America, stay in North America.
That's why hot college prospects are the next best thing!
The idea is that Beniers, Brisson, Knows, etc will all be NHL contributors within the next season or 2 so it's almost just as good as a current NHLer.
February 13th, 2022 at 10:32 AM ^
It puts both USA and Canada at a physical disadvantage, as both teams would likely have been mostly NHL players, but several of the other teams would have had a sprinkling of NHL players too.
But I love the energy and enthusiasm that our youngsters bring, something a little more difficult to quantify.
Bottom line: we're getting a bye into the quarterfinals and are fully weaponized for a run at the Gold!
February 13th, 2022 at 3:14 PM ^
Fivethirtyeight article examining odds/rankings from before and after the NHL announcement that NHL players would not play. TL;DR is that Canada is the biggest loser, followed by the USA, and Russia the biggest winner as they draw nearly all their players from the KHL.

TOP OVERALL SEED
LET'S FUCKING GO!!!!!!!!!
February 13th, 2022 at 10:43 AM ^
Another good job by goalie Drew Commesso, so good to have a pair of excellent goalies for Team USA!
Between Commesso and Michigan Alum Strauss Mann, we've held the opposition to 4 goals in 3 games.

Thank you so much for regularly posting score updates on this thread. With so many other activities going on for me, I can see how things are going quickly.
February 13th, 2022 at 12:37 PM ^
Suck it Germany.
So they get to skip a round now, who will they play the winner of? Is that set yet?
February 13th, 2022 at 5:25 PM ^
Thanks! Interesting format that they don't eliminate any teams during pool play. China should be out now, no reason a team going 0-3 should still be playing. This is good for US though that they will get a team on tired legs.
February 13th, 2022 at 8:12 PM ^
How the hell is getting Germany and Canada again a reward?? Look at the other half of the bracket. I'd much rather be there.
February 13th, 2022 at 8:55 PM ^
February 13th, 2022 at 1:36 PM ^
Are the Russians the gold medal favorites? I thought I heard that somewhere.
February 13th, 2022 at 5:56 PM ^
The group seeding was heavily in their favor. They might not even have to play Canada these Olympics and we likely get them twice.
February 14th, 2022 at 12:43 AM ^
It’s kind of amazing that Germany is still a country. You’d think murdering 10 million people would kinda disqualify you from the whole country thing.
