How did Bacon get so close to the Program?

Submitted by michiganman01 on

As a young fan (high school) I've have heard Bacon's name a lot during the end of the RR era and the past couple of weeks. However, he is only (at least it seems like it) a writer who loves college football, and who graduated from UM. What allowed him to get the "inside" access to the university?

He is what used to be called a journalist.

He is aware that he is not the story, just the reporter.

He does not spread rumors, protects sources, does not write things that have not been verified/double checked, affable and funny.

he knows everybody, and is trustworthy, keeps a confidence, so, people tell him stuff

sign up for his blog; read the books

There are a few folks on this blog who have had the pleasure of sitting in on his lectures and they get rave reviews for the most part too. I believe his "History Of College Athletics" course at Michigan had one of the highest satisfaction ratings of any class on the campus too. As someone said, he is a lifer at Michigan and very accessible too if you have questions for him, from what I have experienced.

but have read his books. I've seen countless interviews on television, and he does seem very likeable and genuine. He always has a smile on his face.

I think it's cool that he actually shares his information with us -- he could choose to just keep quiet, but I think he geniunely cares a great deal for his alma mater.

More love for JUB.

I have posted to his Twitter feed and found him to be gracious and engaging.

I will pretty much read anything he writes at this point.

If you know Bacon personally, as many of us here do, you just accept that the man knows everyone and has his hand in everything. There's no explanation for how or why, but he networks like none other and has an endless supply of business and personal contacts. Charisma and intelligence are a undeniably potent combo.

He's a very bright, influential and engaging guy. Lots of sources that he's worked with seem to trust and like him, because they do feed him good info.

He was selected by the students for the 2009 Golden Apple award, which is given for being an exceptional teacher.  That says a lot.

I had the pleasure of meeting him at the MSU game in 2012 at a tailgate in the Pioneer school lot. Class act all the way, no wonder DB doesn't like him, DB couldn't find class if it hit him the face.

If he could follow the program from the inside a few years ago for a book he was writing. Rich Rod gave Bacon complete access not knowing his own downfall was approaching. When Rich Rod started his downward spiral, Bacon turned his sights on information about the Rich Rod era and it's affect on the program. Bacon had exclusive insight to what was going on and hasn't step away from trying to stay close. Brandon won't allow Bacon to get close any longer however Bacon still has a ton of contacts. So he still gets inside information.
