Hoke: If game was today, Shane would start; Gibbons era officially over

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Welp, looks like it's time for Shane. Hope he's ready.

My interpretations of Hokespeak tell me that "if game was played today" is usually code for this player will be the starter.

Hoke at BWW welcome presser says Gardner saw doctor Friday. If had to play today...Shane Morris the starter

Hoke also said Gibbons will not make the trip and has a family issue at home in Florida

Thank you for all you did for this program, Brendan. A BCS bowl win and being THE THREAT. Brunette girls forever.

Get to watch both MIchigan football and basketball in the same evening with my father. As long as I see improvement on both sides of the ball I will happy. Even is Morris starts I see this being a close game with Michigan having a shot to win. I may be a bit bias, but I do not care!

He also had a nice freshman season before losing to Oklahoma and the Selmons in the Orange Bowl. And Shane might attempt more passes in this game than he did in that whole '75 season. And I know it's not a fair comparison, kind of like apples to space aliens. And I know starting sentences with and is not proper grammar.

"He also had a nice freshman season before losing to Oklahoma and the Selmons in the Orange Bowl."

I came to Michigan football in the fall of 1973.  No bowl that year; no bowl the following year; the Orange Bowl following the 1975 season was the first bowl for this Michigan fan.

Leroy and Dewey Selmon ... even though Oklahoma won, it was hard not to appreciate what those to did on the defensive line.

I am in full support of Sugah Shane if he is the guy under center.  I am done whining and complaining about this season...I hope Devin is ready, but if not, he is a Team guy and will help Shane every step of the way.  If we can keep him upright <looking at you O-Line> and establish some sort of a run game, Shane should be just fine.  GO BLUE and Beat KSU!

Shane Morris busted his butt to put himself in this position. I'm sure he has dreamed about it many times. If his number is called, I hope he kills it.

"If his number is called, I hope he kills it."

Amen to this.

I've got a hunch that we're going to see a lot of really good things out of Morris before he hangs up his Michigan jersey.  He's got decent mobility, a great arm and enough swagger to carry him through some bad plays.

Expect some early jitters, but if the line gives him a little time and the game doesn't come at him too quickly ... I think we'll see some nice things out of him.  I really do.

The most recent update I've seen is a bit vague and from a week ago:

'In other injury news, Hoke said sophomore wide receiver Amara Darboh is "making progress" from his season-ending foot injury. Darboh suffered the foot injury in August, and has been out of a cast for several weeks now.'

You persevered through calamity. You replaced demons with Brunettes. We were fortunate to have you. Godspeed Brandon Gibbons. May your future be bright.

Not that there weren't other good kickers.  But Gibbons had to endure one of the worst things I ever saw.  When Gibbons was new and inexperienced, Coach Rod held open tryouts for any student to come kick for the team.  If that isn't a mental kick in the balls for a scholarship player i don't know what is.  Its one of the several reasons I hold RichRod in such low regard.  I admire Brendan's classiness for proving without saying a word that he was much, much better than that.  His growth as a football player is a really nice success story for Michigan's program.  The 10 second field goal with Dileo's power slide is going to be one of those plays I'll never forget, and it was nice to have him get a moment in front of the mike after the sugar bowl win.  If I could have one back for him, it would be vs. Penn State...that would have helped our season at least from a W-L perspective, but its all part of the game and I hold no ill will.  I predict there will be times going forward when we will sorely miss his left foot converting a 4th and forever into 3 points...and nearly automatic.
