Gridiron Kings Open Thread

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Shane Morris and target Laquon Treadwell are playing together on the Midwest team in the Champion Gridiron Kings 7-on-7 Tournament this weekend.  Pool play competition started today with the Tournament final Sunday at noon ET (stream live on ESPN3 and broadcast at 7pm ET on ESPNU).

EDIT #1: Tournament bracket is set: West vs. Southeast. Midwest vs. Southwest. Winners advance to final at 12pm ET (live on http://espn3.com)

EDIT #2: Midwest will play Southeast in final. In the semis, Midwest beat Southwest 20-14, and Southeast defeated West 26-20.

EDIT #3: Southeast defeats Midwest 47-19. Morris didn't have the same rhythm in 2nd half. If you watch the tape delay on ESPNU tonight on 7pm, I recommend turning it off at halftime.

The bad news: Midwest team has opened the tournament 1-2.  Midwest lost their opener vs. the West 27-21 after Morris could not connect with Treadwell on a fade on 4th and goal. Midwest then lost their 2nd game vs. the Southeast 20-7. Midwest pulled out their first win in the final game of pool play with a Morris 65 yd TD pass in the final minute vs. the Southwest 20-14.

The good news: Reports have Shane and Laquon developing nice chemistry on the field.

Morris and Treadwell are starting to develop a nice connection out here. Several hookups on the day. #Wolverines #GridironKings

It's been Shane Morris to LaQuon Treadwell all day for the Midwest team, best kind of recruiting pitch a QB can make to a WR...

Pool Play Standings

West 1-2

- Day 1 Top Performers (Both have Laquon Treadwell in top 10):

Summary from most recruiting sites: Laquon Treadwell and FSU WR Tony Stevens were the 2 best WRs.  Best DBs were Vernon Hargreaves, Quin Blanding (2014), Leon McQuay, & Marcell Harris (3 of the 4 on the SE team). QBs were not standouts but Shane Morris best of the four. Other standouts were TE OJ Howard and LB Matthew Thomas.

The midwest D looks completely outmatched.  Cushions are so large that often the SE team may as well be playing against air.  SE seems to have some tiny, extremely fast kids, though.

Can't really blame the MW defense......doesn't seem like there's a ton of great WR prospects in the MW. And something like 1 in every 8 HS players in Florida play D1, so the SE kids are challenged every game. MW guys face challenges a couple times every season and at camps. I stopped watching, but when I was, the SE QB was throwing to wide open guys. Shane is forced to be more accurate. But he'll get better because of it. I'd rather have him face a D like this than having a field day because nobody can cover his receivers.

when you have a few corners on our team that are so highly ranked getting torched by 15 yards on simple posts all day, that's pathetic.  Good point on Morris going against a better D.  I'm pumped he's getting so much experience before stepping into the Big House.

Treadwell, Marshall, and Elliott playing defense now.

Jon Reschke beat by OJ Howard who turns it into a long gain for 1st and goal.

Capped with amazing catch by FSU WR Tony Stevens for TD.

SE 47-19

Can't watch.  So please, please  try to be objective: I've read that the MW offense has had a lot of three and outs.  How does Morris look?  Are his receivers letting him down?  Or is it a matter of Morris and receivers not having chemistry/timing?  In short, speaking objectively, is Morris impressing, or does he look sort of 'meh'?

Bailey looked good on O for the SE, McQuay looked good on D for the SE.  #9 (forget name) looked good on O for the SE as well.

Nobody looked good on D for the MW.  Nobody really looked that great on O either.  Treadwell looked good but not great.

Everyone looked like they had fun though.

That Cam Burrows is over rated in my opinion. I know 7on7 favors the offense, but he can't make a play. I blame him the most for the MW loss. I hope he starts as a true freshman for Ohio Bobeyes.
