Excellent Article about John Scott the NHL All-Star from the Player's Tribune

Awesome read, except my office got a little dusty toward the end.

Also just read this one myself, and have to agree it's an excellent article. What started as a joke by fans (NHL's fault for trying to pretend the ASG is serious) became a really special moment for John Scott, his family, and his teammates. Then of course the NHL tried to squash the entire thing in embarrassing fashion. I'll be rooting for him, hope he and his family have an all star weekend to remember.

Powerful, moving story. Dusty here as well

While I guess I'll hand it to the GM for not beating around the bush, breaking the news by saying "You just got traded" is a bit cold.

Lol...it reminds me of the movie Moneyball when Jonah Hill has to break the news.
I'm sure it's best to just do it that way. A long build-up is probably met with more anger than a swift, Band-Aid-esque "you're traded"; which I imagine is met mostly with shock.

The NHL execs are the dumbest group around. I'm half tempted to believe that Bettman was a plant from David Stern to cripple the NBA's rival.

It took me two times reading it to realize that the person asking "Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?" was actually an NHL executive trying to suggest his daughters would somehow be ashamed of him for being an All-Star. I thought that must have been a teammate trying to tell him he should play, not that he shouldn't. I mean, of course his kids will be proud. And when they're old enough to understand, they'll probably be even more proud -- because they'd understand that a goodly number of the voters were choosing their dad because of how cool it would be to have an enforcer voted into the All-Star Game along with all of the skill guys.
Somebody from the NHL needs to learn a little bit more about being a parent -- not to mention about their fanbase. How awful.

This is so good. I was skeptical about the Players Tribune when it launched a few years ago but this is exactly why it's so good.
He's going to get the biggest ovation at the ASG and deserves every second of it.

More than any fanbase in sports, hockey fans understand and appreciate the efforts of role players. If the FANS are voting him in, he should play.
Let John Scott in the all star game.

Choked me up a bit. Sounds like a great guy and a great dad. Thanks so much for posting this. Again, I never would have read this story if it wasn't linked to here. Thank you.

I'll be a John Scott fan from here on out after reading this (except maybe if he tries to take out any Red Wings). I'm pretty much disillusioned with pro sports and their leadership at this point. His kids would be absolutely proud of him for being an all-star unlike what the unnamed NHL executive who posed the question would think. Also: Didn't know he was a Michigan Tech grad--and a smart one at that it seems.

So, I'm on the record that I'm terrified of CTE, and that I think the NHL should ban fighting. HOWEVA - if you want to get your 2010 on, watch John Scott beat the crap out of Kevin Westgarth. Scott was pissed that he had to fight because, with the blowout, he was just starting to get some real ice time.

If someone said that a good portion of NHL fans would actually like John Scott before the season, they would be considered crazy. His repuation before this year was that he was a goon, a talentless player who was only good at mauling people. I'm glad that Scott did take the entire thing in stride, eventually embracing the campaign for his All Star nomination. Aside from being an emotional story, his retelling of his college days was incredible. I'm just hoping that he gets a few goals this weekend.
