Comparison of 2008 and 2011 Defense

A nice comparison (free article) of the 2008 and 2011 defenses over at Rivals by Michael Spath.

I believe the 2011 defense will be much better.

Hoke and Mattison have these guys excited to play and Mattison seems like the type of coach that will get maximum effort out of his players.   Spath makes reference in the article to some guys (Trent) not buying into the RichRod regime back in 2008.

From 2008-09, the linebacker play at Michigan was as bad as its ever been in 131 years of U-M football. There was no reason to fear the Wolverines defenders, who were both slow to react, slow to the ball and then generally arm-tackled their way out of the play. _______________ My whole reason for optimism on defense this year is the coaching. Copious amounts of coaching.

Pretty sure the point Justin was that we sucked with an epic suckiness.  And that when searching over 100+ years of team play, the writers could find no period of time that rivaled 2008-2010 in it's suckdom.

But maybe that's just me.

Honestly, if the defense was as "bad" this year as it was in 2008, I think most of us would be OK with that. Weren't they ranked somewhere in the 60's? I would like higher, but that's still a vast improvement over what we've had the past two years. We were so terrible in 08 mostly because of the offense.
