CCHA Standings as of January 31st

Submitted by WingsNWolverines on
Currently Michigan sits at 7th and Ferris State has moved all the way up to 1st. Now with the Miami series coming up here this week and weekend these are two HUGE games for us both in the CCHA and PairWise. Now my question is this? Ohio has two basically must win games against State this week also and Lil Bro is right below us in the CCHA at 8th. So we want (as bad as this is to say) Ohio to win both to keep Sparty at the bottom right? I just cant picture myself rooting for Ohio in anything. Ugh.

Michigan is 4 points below OSU with 2 games in hand and 3 points above MSU with 0 games in hand.  Even assuming Michigan wins both games in hand, OSU is only a net 2 points below Michigan and therefore a slightly bigger threat.  OSU has 2 at WMU, and a home and home with Miami left, MSU has home-and-Joe with us, two against Alaska in EL and two in South Bend. We can affect State's standings more still, since we play them again and both schedules are pretty difficult down the stretch.  Root for a split, maybe a win/tie in favor of MSU

because right now anything but a regulation win hurts OSU. If Sparty wins both in OT or S/O and we win both against Miami in regulation that's 6 for us keeping us ahead of Sparty and jumping tOSU too.

I wouldn't worry about MSU/Ohio. Ferris and Western are the teams to watch. Michigan has the easiest remaining schedule, with their opponents averaging 1.32 points per conference game, but Ferris is 2nd at 1.41. OSU and Miami have the hardest remaining schedules at 1.63. I've made an attempt to predict the rest of the season by making educated guesses for each of the remaining weekends, and this put Michigan 3rd, behind Ferris and WMU. My prediction for Michigan was 4/3/5/6, while Ferris was 4/3/6/3. This puts M at 50 and FSU at 53. So, at a minimum, barring a complete Ferris meltdown, Michigan needs to win 3 of the next 4 games (2 against Miami and 2 against State) in regulation. That is tough, but doable.

we have an opportunity to play them again and assuming we beat state we will take points from them. we need to be ahead of ohio so if state beats them and assuming we sweep miami we will pass them.

Duluth is probably the only team that deserves first place votes.  But they're coming off a loss and a tie to MTU which, though better than the last few years, still isn't exactly Michigan '96-'97, so I can almost see why somebody might change their vote.  And Ferris does lead the CCHA, which is probably the toughest conference this year and it's not like their record is bad at all.  They haven't reall beaten anybody too impressive (one win in Big Rapids against ND and 2 in Big Rapids against Miami, but Miami near the beginning of the year when they were not good), or are blowing people out, but they've been moderately impressive.  It's not something I would have done, I'm not saying they deserve it, but there are far worse choices.

the standings are so compacted, there's no point in rooting for one team over another, untill the last weekend anyway. Maybe the current top 2 you root against, if they are playing BG or UAF.

with the CCHA especially. Amazed how Ferris State has caught fire and risen to the top. It is going to be one hell of a CCHA playoff run this year! I'm really excited!

As the pre-eminent poster for Ferris over on USCHO, I can't believe we're in 1st, either.

There's waaaay too much hockey yet to be played, and this isn't even close to being sorted out. I just hope both Michigan and Ferris make the NCAAs.
