Bruce Feldman and Stewart Mandel: Frames Janklin to USC is possible if Helton fired

Franklin seems like an above average recruiter and an average at best coach putting the talent to use on the field.
I would be worried to see him go. Penn State might get an upgrade.

I don't think a lot of PSU fans would melt down too much. I think we've seen the extent of Franklin's capabilities at Penn State. Without Moorhead and a generational talent at RB, Penn State is a decent to good program, with the potential to be great if a few bounces go their way. But not elite. He just has certain limitations and I think quite a few Penn State fans would be happy to try their luck with someone else who might get them over that hump.
I'd prefer to see him stay. He's a great recruiter, without question, but his in-game decisions are questionable at best. Would much rather face him than a potential upgrade that Penn State might get if he leaves. Unless PSU gets Schiano....then by all means, run Franklin out of town.

I don't like USC, but I wouldn't wish that on them

Talking to a couple of PSU alum/fans (in their 70s and 80s), I don't think he would be missed. They think his play calling is as baffling as everybody else does. Why USC would hire him is also baffling. I guess he could get a decent OC and his recruiting ability would do well in SoCal.
I don't see USC as a step up from PSU other than the whole Sundusky thing.

The main reason we shouldn’t want it to happen is because if Franklin leaves, the real mastermind (Moorhead) behind Penn State’s success the last few years will come back as the head coach.

Would be a great hire for USC. Franklin is as Hollywood as it gets!

I believe Urban to USC makes more sense for him and for USC. He removes himself from a situation that is obviously uncomfortable and where he has burned out but again (which he seems to do every 5-6 years) and it allows him to reboot once again. USC will pay the freight (big time) and Urban will be back in the West in the PAC 12, a conference that really needs someone like him to go with Chip Kelly at UCLA. It just seems too convenient for it NOT to happen.

If I look at USC..I have a hunch that they'll be mediocre as long as Lynn Swann is their AD. Swann is a dude who was looking for a role with authority and prestige ever since leaving the NFL, and after a failed political career USC was finally happy to give it to him. The eyebrow-raising extension for Helton alone proved that putting on a suit alone doesn't make you a competent leader or administrator.
If I were a USC fan I'd have zero confidence in Swann making a good decision with the next hire.

No way that happens

As I’ve said before going back 4 plus months. USC is looking at Meyer and really want him if there 1st choice is not available.
Kyle Wittengham is who they want and have wanted for many years. He has been quietly offered the SC job in past and turned it down. So keep an eye on SC as they hold the cards for the whole coaching carousel. Say tuned.
