Denard In Space

my scouting report: gotta love the kid's natural stride and good to see some real game film but be cautious -- seems the level of competition might not be elite here. nonetheless this is a no-questions-asked take, any school would be crazy to pass.

too cool.  would take that QB, though not a proven passer will be a terror to opposing D's trying to deal with the RPO, speed-in-space offensive look we now have.

and that yard and paint job, fantastic.  makes me think i should do one of those up here, full-size and reminiscent of field of dreams.  it would certainly lend credence to the phrase, borrowed from the original field of dreams movie,  'XM is the biggest horses behind in 3 counties!  plowed in a perfectly good corn field to put in a football field!'

People will come, XM. They'll come to Michigan for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it, and arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course we won't mind if you look around," you'll say.  "It's only twenty dollars per person."  They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it.  For it is money they have, and peace they lack.

And they'll walk out to the bleachers, and sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon.  They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere around the thirty, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces.

People will come, XM.  The one constant through all the years, XM, has been football. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers.  It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But football has marked the time.

This field, this game -- it's a part of our past, XM. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again.

Ohhhh, people will come, XM.  People will most definitely come.

i know you meant that as semi-humorous and a fine memory of the movie, but even reading it while knowing that makes me want to cut a football field in the corn.  over the years we have played at a few stadiums/fields that literally had standing corn fields at one or another border of the field.  there is something so cool about that, so epically different than the big cities and the crowds of people.  i so love that places like that still exist.  may it ever be so.

EDIT: and a link to that scene.  so good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SB16il97yw

:-) It's one of the best movie speeches there is.  Only a select few actors could have pulled it off.

I just trust that you're smart enough not to plow under the crop you presumably have spent the last month-plus planting and fertilizing. :-). Now, if you could somehow find the time to put up the field after harvest, that's a whole other story. ;-) (On the other hand, if you're not completely exhausted after harvest, then everything I've ever read about farming has been a lie. :)

I'd take a literal cornfield border over yet another giant screen advertising an insurance company any day.  I don't know that I've ever seen a football field like that.  (I did see the baseball field from the movie, though, which was awesome).  Here in Texas, we don't have a lot of corn.  There are probably some fields with cotton planted up within a few yards of the end line, but that's not quite the same visual.  Mostly, though, everything's bigger in Texas -- even the high school stadiums.

from what i understand of texas HS football, some of the stadiums are FCS and/or D-1AA caliber monsters.  none of that up here except when we venture to traverse city - they have a pretty slick field that lists its capacity as 9,000.

too early to plant this year because the ground is way cold.  it has been 5-20 degrees below normal for nearly 2 months, with only a few exceptions.  that said, i think we are going to do more hay this year than anything else, and a smallish amount of corn.  we aren't a large farm and we do livestock, eggs, and a bit of fruit.  i was the permanent-pitcher this afternoon for the 6 youngest playing baseball out back.  no ghosts came out of the field....

I think I'd go nuts if I had to depend upon Mother Nature for my livelihood.  I hope you know we all respect the heck out of you. :) I guess I'll have to increase my apple budget come summer...

Texas high school football is big time.  It's less about the giant stadiums in big cities, like the 19,400 seat stadium in Mesquite or the 18,000 seat stadium in Allen (both Dallas suburbs).  Nederland has a population of about 17,000 -- and a stadium that seats 11,000.  I've driven through some towns in central and west Texas where the tallest structures you'll find are the oil derricks, grain elevators, and the high school football bleachers. :)

i've read a couple of stories about HS football in texas, and specifically about places like nederland.  i have a feeling that our country will change away from football or at least, that it will go away from its uber-popular status, but i hope that doesn't happen for generations.

i don't know who respects me/us for farming (or any other reason), but we are a small operation and right now with many children to help.  with me having another occupation we aren't dependent on it for our livelihood.  we produce a lot of our own food but the world wouldn't end if the farm wasn't working. in fact, as the kids leave it will be harder to maintain all that we do and by necessity will have to draw down operations.  hoping some of them come back home after a time to continue on with what we do.  time will tell.

Ah.  Having a farm as a second job sounds doubly exhausting but less gut-wrenching.

We need to make sure we're taking player safety seriously, especially at the younger levels.  For every NFL player, there are hundreds of high school players.  They need to set good examples -- not leading with the head, speaking out against steroids, etc. -- or football is going to become a game that everybody else's kids are allowed to play.  Even in Texas.

I can't speak for anybody else, but the life experiences you've shared here seem like something from a bygone era for us city folk. ;) So -- respect, because if we traded places, I'm confident you'd survive, and I'm confident I'd starve. :)

Looks really great! I also have nice house and quite big yard. I want to renovate it, make new lawn, new walkways, etc. By the way I read that pea gravel can be good decision for this purpose and also for playgrounds, patios. I count necessary materials with https://concalculator.com/pea-gravel-calculator/ and cost is good for me. I think I will use this decision!
