Are there anymore coaching changes at Michigan? (Football)

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

There have been rumors of multiple changes, some saying up to 3-4 assistants.

It sounds like Mallory didn't get that head coaching job and now we know Borges is gone and Nussmeier is in. Are there anymore changes that anyone is hearing anything about? Anymore speculation? Anymore suggestions?

Inability to move the football, 13 three and outs in a row against Nebraska, how the hell does one make adjustments when your guys are on the field for the whole second half.

Borges shafted the defense all season long with his inflexibility.

I'm not sure who we may get but you have to assume several assistant coaches will be let go. For Nussy to run things his way means bringing in the guys that he wants, not the guys that are already here. One of the best dream options mentioned above was Mario Cristobal. That would be huge

If Hoke and probably Brandon think that replacing Funk is necessary to fix the offensive line then he'll be released. If not then he'll get another year. Was Funk a successful recruiter? What is the impact of releasing him on recruiting? The more the OC change tirggers additional changes through the coaching the more its impact is like a head coaching change. Given the state of the transition, you want to replace ONLY those coaches who also must go, and minimize the disruption. For this reason you want any other coaching changes to happen ASAP.

While the wording of the comment was kind of murky, apparently Hoke met individually with each coach before Al's termination went public. It is a safe bet that each coach asked about his job. Hard to believe that Funk didn't ask. If Nussmeier has been given the green light to replace specific members of the offensive staff, Hoke would have told them. Staff chemistry is a tricky thing.

It is important to remember that all the assistants directly work for Hoke not the coordinators. Nussmeier certainly has input on offensive coaching changes, but the decision will remain Hoke's with Brendon's approval.

I believe a decent amount of recruits (like 5 a year) said they love Funk. I believe he is an above-average recruiter. Also Lewan said Funk is the best position coach he had but that might just be coach-speak.

Jackson won't be fired but maybe forced retirement (I think they are waiting for Hart to get more experience).

Helickski (WR coach) might leave as I heard he wanted the OC position if it became available but he is a great recruiter also.

Mallory is responsible for the player...he doesn't call the plays. So it's not his fault if guys are playing soft. But are they any good? Improving? Yes. Same with Hecklinski. He can't help if we want to run 8 stretch plays to the left vs. PSU when no one is within 15 yards of Gallon. But he made those WRs pretty damn good for the talent/potential they possess. That said. Keep the defensive staff. Hoke may have to help with the TEs even if they spend the majority of their time with Heck and the new OL coach. Let Jackson "retire" and hire Wheatley. Let Funk go join wherever Borges lands and hire a new OL coach (it's not going to be Cristobal). If you want a big name...what about Mike Tice? He's not doing anything is he? Let Ferrigno join wherever Borges lands and hire a new ST coach. What about Mike Mallory? Currently with the Jags. Keep everyone else. But those 3 have to go. And 2 of them could land with Al.

From the offensive side, I see Funk going and Jackson retiring. I'm on the fence about Ferrigno; I think the TEs have been a mixed back with Funchess looking good as a receiver but him and Williams both still unable to block, whereas Butt seems to be developing a well rounded skill set (special teams have been pretty unimpressive, though). I think Hecklinski has done a great job with the WRs and hope he sticks around.

Defensively, I don't know. Probably no change. I think the secondary has been pretty good. There is no dedicated D-line coach, which has probably been the most disappointing unit (youth and size, granted). I've been kind of disappointed by the LB corp, but wouldn't be disappointed if Smith stayed on board.

In sum, Funk and Jackson should go, and possibly Ferrigno. I don't know enough about position coaches to really have anyone in mind to replace them. Wheatley from Buffalo would be pretty nice, but I'm not sure he'd make that move.

My predication is Nuss brings in his own OL coach, pretty easy to can Funk with a new OC+the way they performed (even though they are young and inexperienced), Fred J will retire, and Mallory will be gone.  I have to think someone on the defensive side will go too...
