1st practice recap

So, per rivals:

QB's were rough. Threet short-armed quite a few passes, Feagin couldn't throw a spiral.

Minor was in amazing shape, but only lined up at RB.

Brown lined up at RB, QB, and in the slot. They thought his timing on pitches and the like were lacking, but, since he hasn't done it for years, that's to be expected.

Terrence Robinson and Michael Shaw apparently lined up everywhere - from the backfield, to the slot, to a few reps at QB, to flanker. They said that both showed a huge burst, lots of elusiveness, and Shaw showed great hands (T-Rob, apparently, not as much).

Mcguffie was used exclusively at RB, and looked "fast".

Odoms showed great hands.

Grady practiced, but looked like he gained some pudge since the spring.

Carson Butler is apparently the most impressive physical specimen on the team, with Will Johnson being a close second (Johnson, apparently, broke virtually every Michigan weight-lifting record in the off-season.

Adam Patterson also was singled out repeatedly for being awesome in conditioning.

Terrence Taylor was also absurdly slimmed down, apparently.

Apparently, they were extremely creative with how they got the ball in the hands of guys like Odoms, Robinson, Brown, Horn, and Shaw - options to the slot receiver, screens, pitches, reverses, etc.

JB Fitzgerald wasn't there.

George Morales was!

Why wasn't he at practice? It would be annoying if he didn't qualify or something - he looks like the best of our LB crop. Well, as far as I can tell from Rivals videos and recruiting pundit discussions . . .

Since Morales hasn't been listed on the board against the 25, perhaps he was promised 1-yr scholarships if available (which this year there is IIRC)?

I've wondered about him since the Pryor announcement to OSU.

Rivals says they aren't sure of Morales' scholly situation. They also don't know why Fitz wasn't there.

Thanks for the update. It seems that all the new recruits have one thing in common: SPEED. I love it. Also, RR said that Morales "is on scholarship" in his press conference.

http://www.mgoblue.com/football/article.aspx?id=142140 Nothing groundbreaking - a few tidbits: Grady has earned the right to practice but not to play, Morales signed in February and is on the team, many frosh in the mix to play, junior hemingway was the only guy limited do to injuries, I believe he said "Who Cares" in regard to being ranked in the preseason polls. ---------------------------- I don't think we'll have to throw a lot to win, especially with the short pass friendly spread. If we get qb play better than 2001 Navarre we will be fine.

I dunno. This is pretty much the first time ever in Michigan history that we've been privvy to the details of what's occuring during practice. When I read the string of Rivals posters going "OMG we're soo screwed at QB!!!", I wondered if certain elements of our fanbase were truly ready for the press to have full access. Sure, Threet may have looked like crap yesterday, but I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time a Michigan QB blew at the first practice - this is just the first time we're hearing about it.

I got my freshman LB's confused. JB Fitzgerald was there. Marcus Witherspoon was not. "Insiders" on Scount claim there is something up with his grades, and it may or may not be resolved soon.

I wiould imagine that the first practice in the summer is always a little rough. They have been practicing on their own all summer. It's very likely that there were slight differences in the way things were run without coaches and with coaches, causing slight timing differences. If in a week reports are things are still rough, then I may begin to get concerned. I'm more interested in hearing how the not-so-big uglies on the o-line look.
