Star Rankings

seen on another board: "MSU's star rankings from Rivals Our current starting lineup = 2.79 stars Roland Martin = 4 stars Charlie Gantt = 4 stars Eric Gordon = 4 stars Mark Dell = 4 stars Brian Hoyer = 3 stars Javon Ringer = 3 stars Brandon Long = 3 stars Otis Wiley = 3 stars Ryan Allison = 3 stars Rocco Cironi = 3 stars Joel Nitchman = 3 stars Kendall Davis-Clark = 3 stars Brett Swenson = 3 stars Oren Wilson = 3 stars Greg Jones = 3 stars BJ Cunningham = 3 stars Johnny Adams = 3 stars Jesse Miller = 2 stars Justin Kershaw = 2 stars Trevor Anderson = 2 stars Dan Fortener = 2 stars Aaron Bates = 2 stars Joel Foreman = 2 stars Blair White = Walk-on" Compared to ours: Offense Matthews- 4 Ortmann- 3 Ferrara- 3 Molk- 3 Moosman- 4 Shilling- 5 Koger- 4 Odoms- 3 Stonum- 4 Threet- 4 Minor- 4 O = 3.72 stars Defense Jamison- 4 Johnson- 4 Taylor- 4 Graham- 5 Thompson- 3 Ezeh- 3 Mouton- 4 Trent- 4 Brown- 4 Harrison- 4 Warren- 5 D = 4 stars Total = 3.86 this is just unacceptable. How did we lose to MSU when our players have vastly superior talent? coaching and conditioning certainly arent the issue as brian has so eloquantly detailed in this blog. It is amazing that experience at key positions makes such a difference. this just shows how quickly we will be back. this much talent can not possibly under acheive for two years in a row. - The Michigan Difference (LSA'99)

but, keep in mind that some of those 3's are on the OL, what's more ferrara was a 3 at not OL, and that the OL are very young, which has a disproportionate impact on the team. same with the LBs. also, not all talent pans out, and i'm about ready to call ezeh a miss, also charles stewart is not on there, and he is a very bad player playing a very important position.

Why are people so quick to call Ezeh a miss? He is a natural outside linebacker, so he is out of position. He makes mistakes yes, but at the same time he gets TONS of tackles and makes some good plays. And can you really call him a recruiting miss? HE was a 3 star RB who has started at MLB for two years and has lead the teams in tackles for a season at least (I don't know about this year, but I bet he is this year too). That sonds liike a success to me.

At no point did Michigan, or anyone, really, plan on having him play RB. He was always a LB. That said, he's a sophomore. I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about him as Patty Max, but the guy, ordinarily, would be sitting on the bench right now behind a veteran - not be in his second year of starting. We never saw what Victor Hobson, Larry Foote, Ian Gold, or David Harris looked like as sophomores, so lets chill.

Moreso than any other position, experience matters as much or more than pure talent on the offensive line. And we had jack squat experience there. Not to mention freshmen playing all over the place elsewhere on the offense. Defensively, our line has been about as we thought it would be (with the 5-star Graham being the best player on either side of the ball for us). The linebackers don't have a lot of experience, and some of those defensive backs just plain haven't panned out (plus Warren has been dealing with injury). This is why the whole "how are they losing with all that talent" meme is so aggravating -- judging purely on a high school talent evaluation really misses the boat when there are other factors involved. New system and minimal experience at O-line, WR, QB and linebacker have hurt us in a big way this year. Better perceieved talent won't make up for that.

Games aren't decided by Rivals' ratings. Your lineups don't take experience into account. And who cares what they were rated coming out of high school? Javon Ringer, for example, is clearly not a 3 star back. You're putting way too much stock into star-ratings.

The variance in talent with 3* is huge. There are so many of them that some are near 4* while other are kind token 3* who should be 2*. A better indicator that I would love to see (but am too lazy to look up) would be their position ranking averaged out.

Maybe it has to do with 9 freshmen with serious contribution for Michigan, compared to a senior laden MSU team on both sides of the ball. How about a senior QB and RB for MSU compared to Michigan's freshman QB (who isn't very good anyway) and patch-work O-line. Also, Trent was a 4-star WR, then switched to CB in college. This negates his ranking, and Mouton also was a position switch (s-lb not as big but still a change). Oh yeah, and Brown wasn't very good BEFORE RichRod got there so, again, this concept is negated. Wait, is the team transitioning to a different offensive philosophy or something? I thought I remembered reading that may be happening this year on some obscure ESPN pg. 2 article or something.

I think it's hilarious that one sentence he declares "this is unacceptable", and then, in the very next sentence, takes encouragement from it.

Important to note: You're only as strong as your weakest link (See: linebackers/safeties/OL). Then you'll understand why your simple analysis isn't going to win a Nobel prize.

The "star" ranking of HS football players is truly a joke! The name is derived from the fact you would have to be hit in the head with a 2 X 4 and seeing stars to take them seriously. They're just as reliable as the pre-season polls!!!

Please delete this thread. The cupboard was left bare. Bare, I tell you! Rodriguez was forced to make bricks without straw! He had only a high school junior, some twine, and a small plank of wood to make a football team out of. The fact that he's won three games with such abysmal players is true indication that he is the Greatest Coach in America.

Why don't you do the same thing with Toledo's starters, or App State's for that matter (I'm guessing ASU's star avg would be about .37) this kind of thing happens in college football.

I'm guessing he just forgot to close the quote after the sentence ending with "superior talent." The rest, starting with "coaching and conditioning" is probably his own commentary, but it's not clear at all. Then again, he does admit to being in LS&Play... ;)

LS&Play? Doctor and Lawyers coming out of Michigan almost predominantly graduated from LSA, so I wouldn't knock it too hard. Also, I think calling Ezeh a bust is harsh. The kid was a low 3-star running back who is now starting at MLB. Low rating and position switch implies low expectations, which he has to have met. Calling ANY kid a bust during his sophomore year is also way too early. I don't think I knew who Chris Perry even was when he was a sophomore. Let's give him a little time before we label him a bust.

If MSU's players were as young as us (or, conversely, if we were as experienced as they are), I'd be concerned. Since they have a senior-led team and we have a freshman-led team, I don't care. Young teams struggle. Veteran teams usually do well. That's true everywhere.
