Greg Mattison DC Buzz?
Just stumbled on this:
Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is talking with the University of Michigan about their job, per league source.
It's all over numerous sources via Twitter (Ravens_Football, Ravens Insider) FWIW.
EDIT:

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is under consideration for the same position at the University of Michigan, the Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday, citing a league source.
Mattison, who has interviewed with Michigan, coached with new Wolverines coach Brady Hoke under Jack Harbaugh at Western Michigan and Lloyd Carr at Michigan.
The Ravens defense has ranked in the top 10 in the NFL during both of Mattison's seasons as coordinator after Rex Ryan left to take the New York Jets coaching job.
The Sun reported defensive backs coach Chuck Pagano could be a front-runner to replace Mattison.

Great resume and what better D to emulate than the Ravens
January 18th, 2011 at 4:49 PM ^
I like him, and he's not bad for being the second best DC in the AFC North...............
...............in all seriousness. We should have hired him yesterday. This would be a major score for the program, where it really matters the most.

Everyone excited by the prospect of Greg Mattison needs to take a look back to how frustrated Michigan fans were with Mattison's defenses during the 1995-6 years. It was such a breath of fresh air when Jim Herrman and his (at the time) attacking defense was installed for the 1997 season unlike the lethargic Mattison defenses.
He may be more competent than Gerg, but he is no defensive savant. For the love of Dave Brandon- the guy has two Hall of Famers on his Ravens' defense.

way to be a debbie downer!!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:56 PM ^
This is somewhat truthful. To be fair, Mattison was not the DC for the Ravens when Reed and Lewis were in their prime. He has taken an aging and oft-injured Ed Reed, plus an aging Lewis and maintained their level of success. This says something about his coaching capabilities and schemes.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:58 PM ^
Well you'd think the guy has learned something in the past 15 years of being a D coordinator, so I really don't think that first point stands but the two HOFers do raise some concerns. It does show that he can handle their talent effectively at least.
The big thing is, Michigan really doesn't have a lot of options at DC and Mattison seems like a pretty solid choice all things considered.

I agree that the mid 90's defenses were a little too much "bend but don't break". But, Herman had the best collection of defensive talent in Michigan history went he took the DC postition. After the '97 departures, the defense dropped off considerably to the same level of play as the Mattison era.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:40 PM ^
The 1999 defense was solid as hell.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:54 PM ^
Agree..dropped off statistically to the pre '97 era, I should say.

Just did a lil' searchy search and found this:
Max points scored against us - 29. I'll take it. 90s Wolverines fans were spoiled...

that he was willing to pay for the right personnel. We'll see.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:53 PM ^
I'd personally be thrilled with the hire. Connections to the program, and the time spent in the NFL and Florida should help recruiting. Taking a lateral move like this would show commitment and enthusiasm for the program as well.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
As he runs a 3-3-5 at Baltimore, he should be able to seemlessly step in and maintain a defense that plays up our lack of depth in the defensive backfield.
(yes I am kidding. it will be nice when the defensive madness is over. Hopefully starting in Sept)
January 18th, 2011 at 4:55 PM ^
If he can bring that kind of success to Ann Arbor, then it may not be long until Michigan is once again competing for Big Ten titles. Though if he has any stuffed animals that he uses as motivational tools, he should probably leave them behind in Baltimore. Maybe bring Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs instead.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:57 PM ^
anyone on Twitter notice that all of the Baltimore fans are praying for us to take Mattison? Apparently they don't like him out there... Anyone know why?
January 18th, 2011 at 5:03 PM ^
The defense has really low sack totals I guess but overall it's pretty darn good.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:09 PM ^
Nobody is happy with who they have, there always has to be someone out there that is better, right?
January 18th, 2011 at 5:04 PM ^
... They also want to get rid of cam cameron, the offensive mastermind who developed joe flacco. The fans think it's the offensive and defensive coordinators fault that they lost to the steelers, and the only solution that makes sense is to fire both of them.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:17 PM ^
Might we take both of them off of the Ravens' hands?
Hell, we might even need to make a t-shirt saying "Ravens, all your coach are belong to us."
January 18th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
My friend is a diehard Ravens fan with seasons tickets and we were talking today at the gym and he said ok this is what they need to do next year. OK guys were playing the Texans next week and our gameplan will be this play which we will use to beat the Steelers. He's a very knowledgeable fan and doesn't have any problem with the staff and/or players besides the offensive line which he wants to improve. He just wants to beat the Steelers. They have lost to them 2 out of the last 3 years in the playoffs, and many forget how badly they beat NewEngland at NewEngland last year. He says he feels my pain with tsio the last few years, which I reminded him is not even comparable at this point.

Oh and Lane Kiffin just interviewed too FWIW
January 18th, 2011 at 5:10 PM ^
but I'll believe it when I see it. Wasn't too long ago that the rumor mill had Jimmy Hairball as a lock to become our next HC.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
Think about Mattison recruiting Jenkins-Stone and James Ross this spring.
"Michigan State? Who? Did their DC coach Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs? He didn't? Well then..."
January 18th, 2011 at 5:41 PM ^
I'll take it!!
So what if he is a little on the old side, we need an immediate impact and I believe he is the best person for the job right now.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is expected to go the University of Michigan as their new defensive coordinator, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.
No deal has been formally reached, though

I tried to posbang you multiple times
January 18th, 2011 at 5:54 PM ^
At this point, I would be ecstatic to get Mattison. They just need to get someone (better than Gerg) and try to salvage this class ASAP.

Sounds like the deal is done from the twitter noise, hopefully Mattison can be successful here.

There aren't may coaches who would have been worth the wait. Mattison is one of them. Please Please let the rumors be true...
