CC- Ross said to stay at Stanford
Sorry if this has been talked about somewhere else....Ross told Harbaugh to stay at Stanford.
"Harbaugh wanted to go to the NFL, but he wasn't exactly sure. He asked me, 'What should I do?' I recommended, 'Go back to Stanford and hitch yourself to the quarterback. You've got the best quarterback. You can win the national championship. The pros will be there.' "

I mean, he's not wrong.

+1 for Lowell Red Arrow avatar. Played against them back before they got good.

Back in Fall of 1976. We were co-champs (Sparta) of the Tri-River League that year. I was a starting RB and safety.

Ha! I got out of SHS sometime between 1976 and Lowell's rise to dominance.

I helped start our rise to dominance...haha. I actually coached there from 97-2008 and plan to start back up this year.

Trying Reverse Psychology, only he went with the 9ers instead of Michigan. Nice effort though.

Thanks Steve.

This sounds like a very lame attempt by Ross to convince people he didn't go behind Sparano's back. Yes, I'm sure he and his GM routinely fly red-eye across the country to give career advice.

We have no idea what Ross and JH talked about, and we never will. You don't make billions in real estate by telling the whole story to the media.

We should rename the business school the "Go Back to Stanford" School of Business.
January 8th, 2011 at 7:49 PM ^

Somehow I have trouble believing that.

Steve, say it ain't so? We sent you to bring back Jimmy and you sold us out to Stanford (and delivered him via executive jet, no less)?
Btw, any chance you can spring for a new HC for us? We are kinda in a bind.

How this man got rich, I'll never know. Not by keeping his damn mouth shut, I'd bet.

Real Estate.
January 8th, 2011 at 7:40 PM ^
Is that, if he said this, it was after JH had made it clear Michigan was not an option.
January 8th, 2011 at 7:42 PM ^
Indeed. As was posted numerous times already Steve contacted Michigan to make sure he wouldn't be competing with them over Jim.
January 8th, 2011 at 7:44 PM ^
Either that, or Ross was saying this because DB and MSC told Ross privately that they never wanted JH. We all know Ross is super connected and I just can't see him saying this to JH if DB and MSC really want JH.
I don't think we will ever find out why Ross told JH to go back to Stanford.
January 8th, 2011 at 8:24 PM ^
So many cynics...do you completely discount the possibility that it was good advice?
January 8th, 2011 at 8:31 PM ^
I live in NYC and work in finance. What do you expect. I get paid for being cynical. In all seriousness, with all Ross has done for Michigan, even if JH wasn't interested, I would expect Ross to try to convince him unless he had other reasons. I am probably wrong, but Ross doesn't seem like the buddy buddy type. For a man to get to where he is in life, I would think anything he says there is a reason for it.

Harbaugh turned us down. It happened.

Ross probably knew there was no chance Harbaugh would come to Michigan, so he thought the second best option for Harbaugh would be to stay at Stanford.
