OT: Carl Crawford agrees to massive deal.

Submitted by dieseljr32 on

As per ESPN, Carl Crawford has supposedly agreed to a 7 year, $142 million deal with the Boston Red Sox.  This is good for him but bad for the Tigers.

If Tigers fans have been following the offseason then they will know Detroit was working with something like a $61 million salary cap and was looking to sign big name free agents.  They landed Victor Martinez and Joaquin Benoit but are still looking for more particularly in the outfield.

So far they have whiffed on Adam Dunn, Jayson Werth, and now Carl Crawford all potential prospects.  This pretty much blows.

To me, this deal is a toss up. Yeah it makes sense from a lineup perspective, ellsbury, crawford, agon, youk, ortiz, drew, salty, pedroia, lowery, makes a very scary nine. But at the same time, why pay a player who's main attribute is his speed, and stick him in front of the green monster? If they wanted to get another outfielder, Werth would have been the better option, as he is a righty.  Who knows, maybe Ellsbury becomes expandable after this move.

One thing is for certain, I'm glad the Tigers didn't overpay for Crawford or Werth. If we bring back Maglio for 8-10 mil, we still have wiggle room for a 4-5th starter. The Martinez deal, money wise, is a steal. He brings a new dimention to the lineup, switch hitter, and we no longer have to see Laird strike out three times a game. I like what the Tigers have done so far this offseason and I think they are very close talent wise to the Twins and Sox

That's it? That's all they're paying him? The Tigers couldn't go a percentage point over his $20M/year value?

To what, cover all that ground in left field of Fenway?

Such a fucking waste. Boston already has tons of speed in their lineup; their tiny left field should allow them to play someone else's right fielder out at the monster. Crawford would have been 10 times the Tiger, a setup man for V-Mart and Cabby, and in charge of covering the huge Comerica Park left field.

And then for just that? They're not even going to pay the man into his 40s.

Dammit. Would have been such a Tiger.
